It must be time for Russia to introduce a nation wide smoking ban?
In the rabbit hole I went down, reading about this incident, I came across a blaze there in 2011, in which 28,000 people were evacuated.
The reason given was.....a discarded cigarette.

There was also a school shooting in Sept 2022, in which children were killed, and the Russians reported that the gunman was wearing a nazi T shirt. Hmmm. Does that ring any bells? Izhevsk is just over the border from Bashkortostan, the centre of recent ethnic unrest. Was the gunman in the school shooting really a nazi, or did the authorities feel the need to cover up some ethnic unrest?

So little news gets out of Russia, and any independent journalists are prevented from carrying out objective journalism, that it is hard to know where the truth ends and the fiction starts.

The only 'good' thing that comes to mind about how Russia is run as a dictatorship is that Putin can ensure more money and bodies committed to his war anytime he wants. Contrast that with how EU funds have been delayed by Orban, and US funds delayed/stopped by Trumpist Republicans 🤷🏼‍♂️. (Yes, I still believe in democracy...).

Trump is so awful that he will always provide a strong argument against democracy.

Your first point is so true, as we are seeing in today's news. The casualties don't matter as Putin can hide them from the public.

But there is another point. As a dictator, he can plan years or decades ahead, unfettered by any bothersome elections or parliamentary curbs on planned spending.
When this is all over, the sanctions must remain in place, to remove the risk of a future Russia from re-arming and trying again.

You are right, Putin and his cabal can plan for decades.
So long as a high percentage of Russian casualties are from the dispersed far flung ethnic provinces, and possibly the prison population too, he can indeed hide the true figures from public scrutiny.

The truth ends and fiction starts when the Russians start reporting

Yep. I wonder if any Russians in authority or the media truly understand the long-term damage that their habitual lying is doing to the reputation of all Russians?

Btw, where did you find that strapline 'You know dem way dare'? I saw it somewhere very recently - it's Pidgin isn't it?

It's just from London football fans

(you know that's how it is)

Russia seems to be grounding this out until Ukraine runs out of men and the Western allies, USA mainly decide that they won't supply more arms.
Worryingly, I saw a program that the Russian economy has bot been decimated by western sanctions as expected and has been revived in a war economy.

Ukraine will soon be fighting on its own if this sh*t continues.
When will right wing US and Europe realise that Putin is the new Hitler.
Or maybe that’s just what they want.
The West is pathetic - just as Putin thought it would be
He’s sunk enough money into them over the last decade to buy their compliance. Right wing politicians from all over Europe and the US have various links to Putin or his cronies, including here in the UK.

Many also see him as a partner in their “anti-woke” agenda, his banning of gay rights has drawn many an admiring glance from around the hard right in the west.
