The Royle Family -
1998-2012, 25 episodes

An incredibly warm, earthy sitcom with tonnes of pathos. A brave decision at the time to write a sitcom basically about 4-6 very normal people sitting around doing nothing of an evening, but the tight dialogue and strong performances carried it through - in turn, TRF gave birth to the now reality TV juggernaut Gogglebox.

Suffered from a severe dip in writing towards the end, but would still hope to get through the group, given a fair wind.

Father Ted - 1995-1998, 25 episodes

Highly popular comedy from the Emerald Isle. Passed me by a little but I expect to see a strong showing here.

Inside No. 9 - 2014-Present, 50 episodes

The black sheep of the competition, some have questioned the show's validity in a comedy setting. Whilst Shearsmith and Pemberton's comedic credentials cannot be questioned - see The League of Gentlemen, preparing for a tough Group C - is it enough to see them through this one? 50 episodes (with more on the way) is impressive, but is there enough great comedy contained within?

Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em - 1973-1978, 23 episodes

I can't pretend to know much about this one. You tell me - is it worthy of qualifying from this group?

Reminder - Two qualify from each group into the Round of 16. You have ONE vote per group, so use it wisely. Please feel free to link to relevant YouTube videos, or justify your chosen comedy in writing.

Each Group will run for 5 days, to allow plenty of time for voting.

I’ve been rewatching Some Mothers Do ‘Ave ‘Em recently and think that it’s a bit of a classic. Mainly due to Crawford’s brilliant acting. His facial expressions are genius and largely copied off his kids. It got my vote as although Father Ted is better, it’s a bit too Irish for a UK competition in my opinion.

Torn between the first two but went for Father Ted. Both shows absolutely comedy genius of their time.

Just a nudge for anyone who hasn’t voted, and to confirm Groups C & D will go live later this evening.

With Ted I was struggling with the first episode until I adjusted to it. Genius.

I’m not following this really but have Python and Milligan flopped.
Ageists on here now.

Neither received enough support in nominations to make the final tournament.

There's always next year (or whenever I bother to next do this).

Father Ted is now in "resting players for the 3rd group game" mode, but there is a BATTLE on for second place between the Royles and Some Mothers...
