[Albion] Your first away game watching The Albion

1962, Rotherham. I was 8 and my Dad took me on a work trip in his van to somewhere up there close enough to go to the game. All I remember is that we lost by a lot. Just looked it up and we lost 2-5.

I had the misfortune to see the FA cup replay at Stanford Bridge. Must have been about 1967. We were outclassed for 90 minutes and lost 4:0.

Even though we lost I got the away game bug massively. Also that season did (from memory) Gillingham, Brentford (the one where Brighton smashed up one of the pubs, not the one where Nelson scored a blinder), Aldershot and Chester. All of them were completely insane off the pitch, more so because we didn't use the coach again after Southend.

Was that the year we were promoted behind Sunderland?

I went to those games Southend the door was smashed open and a few got in. Gillingham we went to Maidstone the night before and the only thing i remember was that the town was mad. Also kicked off after the game. I was in said pub when the window was put through and the landlord running out trying to catch the scouse lad. Chester we got the coach on the Sunday night i think from the Nellie peck think that's the name of it..

Mmm after typing all that i think it may of been a year or two later.

Liverpool 1982, lost 3-1 around October time, coach from pool valley. Got the bug, we got brave and it was train or my mates van after that. 52 grounds done and it never
disappointed me the thrill of an away day - well maybe the journey home after a defeat.

It was exactly that season, 87-88 when we ended up going up against Bristol Rovers at home.

After Gillingham there were fights all the way back to the station and the OB met our train at Victoria. Chester was mental, full of Brighton in the town, remember randomly some bloke had a spray painted sheet that had BHA on it but he made it stand for Brighton Holsten Army.

I arrived at Brentford well after the action. Went to the ground and immediately got kettled. After the game nearly got trampled by a charging police horse in an estate.

I was 16 and I had no idea about the pub getting done. The Argus ran a front page about it and how many were nicked. My mum brought it home for me, she wasn't impressed :lol:

My first away game and my first ever Brighton game.

Peterborough away 2nd October 1999.
Went to both the league game which was 0-0 and the Fa cup game later than month that was 1-1. They both blend into one memory tbh.

I was 6 and all I remember was my grandad getting us tickets in the Peterborough end for the first game because he didn’t know we had seats other that’s he terrace, we got moved my stewards before kick off.

And that we wore the black and red skint kit and Oatway and Cullip were on the back of loads of shirts of Brighton fans walking to the ground.

Living in Lincolnshire at the time, I watched us play at Peterborough, Scunthorpe, Lincoln and Forest way before I ever saw a home game.

The Chester game we arrived at about 8/9am ( I'm sure it was a bank holiday Monday) 50/60 of us split up and went our different ways till 12 when the pubs opened. On the way home i think Sunderland were away to Notts County in an evening game and we wanted the coach driver to get us there for half time he refused though.

My word, that was a very, very messy weekend was that. Involving Brody's Cider, chundering over a Mini, and an unrelated incident that could have been tragic in which I was correctly labelled the hero, but could easily have been the villain had it not been for good fortune.

My somewhat less eventful first away day was the F A Cup match at Watford in 1984. On the coach with a friend of the family and straight back afterwards. It was the match in which I found out what a Walkman was. The infancy of tech.

Cold blow lane with my dad who was Millwall not a scooby what year i was amazed at how many Brighton supporters were there and how much fun I had just tagging along with the crowd,I quickly upgraded from monkey boots to Dr Martens :)

A one nil win to the Albion at Selhurst in the mid seventies.

Missed the early goal by Barry Butlin , lashing down with rain , sat in the old grandstand which I presume must be the proposed "new" stand.
