"If fans want entertainment they can go to the circus."
Ian Greaves, Bolton manager, circa 1980. (I also think the Juventus manager said it recently as well).

Two that I saw on the TV back in the 1970s that have stuck with me. I wish I could remember who said them. They were both by managers of lower-league clubs talking about FA Cup ties against higher division opponents:
"They're the better team on paper, but it's not played on paper it's played on grass."
"They're just men the same as us. We've all got two arms and two heads." (I'm guessing he meant to say 'legs').

Harry Basset at Wimbledon. One us Albion fans can relate to I think :lolol:

“In my last season we had 23 first-team players and 13 had played in the youth team. If that had been Manchester United people would have been ejaculating all over the stadium”

Comments from thick players make me chuckle. The exact quote isn’t on record but Palace keeper Hennessey having ‘never heard of Hitler’ must’ve taken the biscuit to all those in earshot.
David Seaman’s embarrassing quote when filming the three lions video to Frank Skinner: “So Frank, who is this Jules Rimet in the song?”

Danny Baker’s “****ing football. Imagine not being into it. Those poor, poor half-alive bastards.” quote wins it for me…

However I quite like the sobering thoughts of Walter Smith:
“If there’s one thing in football that I’ve learnt, it’s that it is guaranteed to let you down more often than cheer you up”

After Alex Ferguson praised Roy Keane him in his recently released autobiography for "covering every blade of grass" in the 1999 Champions League semi-final second leg against Juventus. Keane said

"Stuff like that almost insults me. I get offended when people give quotes like that about me. It's like praising the postman for delivering letters."

I like it because in work these days praise seems to be given out for things like turning up in the office - grumpy sod he is/ I am

Not a favourite but I have felt like this sometimes over the years!

Clough “The players haven't got enough heart to fill a thimble” – on his Brighton side’s 8-2 defeat to Bristol Rovers.

This one I do like and although it was Clough I think De Zerbi is not much different.

On players “We talk about it for 20 minutes and then we decide I was right”

This is my favourite Clough quote

“The River Trent is lovely, I know because I have walked on it for 18 years”

Apparently a quote from a Peterborough fan after the 0-4 at London Road under Gus.

”f*** me, I didn’t know we were playing Real Madrid today”

I guess you had to have been there
It was 0-3

“They have a unique way of playing and we didn’t work it out. To be out there was demoralising. To try and defend, seeing them keep the ball. I got a yellow card, could have got another one.
I never want to feel like that on a football pitch. I’d never step on the pitch and allow the opposition to have more passion than me and it’s the same for the others. We’re wearing the shirt of West Ham and the one thing that matters is fighting for the badge.
Maybe it didn’t look like we did as we lost 4-0 but I can assure you we tried as best as we could but we were beaten by the better team.”

Declan Rice after losing 4-0 to Robert De Zerbi's side in March '23.

Yes it was and I had pie and liquor before the game washed down with Meantime pale ale in the Union pub
They also had a smoking area at the back of the away stand I seem to remember, which was nice for smokers. Sadly I had just given up
