Slightly off topic, but a good pub quiz question...

If 64 teams are involved in a knockout competition, with no replays, how many games are played before some team wins it?

It’s always “number of teams minus 1” to work out number of games in a knockout, because every game knocks out one team except for the final. So for a million teams in a knockout you can immediately say there’ll be 999,999 games, or for 64 there’ll be 63.

63, its quite easy to work out-each team has to lose a game until 1 is left, works for any knock out competition with no replays-like Wimbledon. 200 entrants 199 matches, 260 entrants 259 matches etc

32 + 16 + 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 = 63

But up to the final it is home and away so

64 + 32 + 16 + 8 + 4 + 1 = ...125

How many teams do you think the final knocks out?

Assuming you are talking about European football (as there are no other competitions I can think of that are home and away legs all the way through).

Your numbers are wrong for the way the game structure works although the total number of games is correct.

For Champions League It’s 96 groups games then 16, 8, 4, 1 for 125 games

It’s different again for the Europa and Conference League competitions. This is because there is an extra play off round after the group stage when the teams who finished 3rd in the CL or Europa League drop into the lower competitions to play the group runners up.

This means it’s

96. 16, 16, 8, 4, 1 meaning 141 games

Hope Dinamo Zagreb don't qualify. 120 of them showed up in Athens last night, put 8 people in hospital and killed someone. They were attacking everyone, families out with young children. It didn't seem to matter to these psychopaths.
There are plenty of teams in Europe with fans like that, especially in Eastern Europe. If you see Danny Dyer and Ross Kemp filming, it’s time to run for cover!

So, here we are planning our trips to some far off country to s**g their women and drink their beer, but somewhere deep in the heart of Euroland a group of supporters, very similar to us maybe, are writing on чат на северната трибуна or maybe conversația tribunei nordice or perhaps even czat na trybunie północnej about how they hope to be drawn against Brighton.

Heck, I do believe the first site even exsists!!

Anywhere in Israel please, I promised her indoors we'd go one day, how odd would it be if we were happening to be playing nearby that very week we decide to go

I'm just going to watch Klaksvik v Molde on Ladbrokes.
Klaskvik are that team from The Faroe Islands, who have stuck it to some of the 'bigger' clubs. So I've had a cheeky bet on

Molde!

Any chance of Ljubljana away first game. My wife has booked dinner in the city on the Saturday, it would get me out of a real life dilemma unless the first game is at home.
Long story but I'm right in the sh#t.
