A friend does exactly that. It prevents them breeding which is a big help in reducing the number of ferals. We don't have a huge problem in Britain with feral cats.

It is strange in this country how the term 'responsible dog owner' is common place, but no such term exists for cat owners.
Cats can just be let out and do what they like, which is usually shit in other people's gardens and kill wildlife. It's a bizarre situation as, if a dog done either of those things then the owner would likely be in trouble.

The reasons why cats are allowed to roam free, and why dogs aren't, are fairly simple:

1. dogs are bred to be obedient (also known as thick) and will generally struggle to cope on their own
2. in case they are not obedient, they could - unlike cats - be dangerous to humans

This is why dog owners are required to be responsible. A cat can't bite the face off some kid or intimidate them through stealing their football or whatever. They prefer not to interact with humans. A bad cat will shit and piss inside, a bad dog can kill you. The difference is quite substantial.

I also don't think people who have cats really see it as "owning cats" in the same way as you "own a dog". There is a clear hierarchy between man and dog and thats the kind of company some people want. Without you, the dog will be unhappy, not be able to get exercise. You get to be a hero for most of the day - Fido needs you. Some people like that. Other people prefer more independent, less needy company.

Yes, cats kill a lot. They've lived by our sides for 10 000 years and while their introduction has been catastrophic (pun unintended but turned out great) for biodiversity in some areas, they've obviously not caused substantial environmental imbalance because then we'd be f***ed thousands of years ago. It is first now when human actions and inventions are killing off the environment that we're suddenly thinking... "lets blame the cat".

As for shitting in your backyard, your backyard is supposed to be shat in. Also anything growing in your backyard isn't truly yours. Your flowers, trees and organisms are living organisms that would be thrilled not having you around, whereas you'd die if there was no grass or flowers. In essence you have no more right to enjoy these things compared to a cat or a snail or a hedgehog or whatever.

My cats get shouted at if they jump up on the worktops, and have, as much as cats learn anything, not to do it anymore. It is mutual understanding. I also have cleansing products to clean the worktop before food is prepared.

I'm still not going to lose sleep though over some nutter going round shaving cats when there's literally millions of animals systematically killed for human indulgence on a daily basis, with large chunks of specism, not to mention anthropomorphism, going on too.

Cats will go anywhere they please, whether you keep an eye on or not.
Mrs AR is an ex head chef, so hygiene in kitchen is second to none, and the smell of herbs and spices is enough deterrent to keep moggy off work surfaces
As to the cat loo, no soon as ours as done his pees and poo, a change of litter is imminent
