Under Hughton, we lost 0-1 to Sheffield Wednesday (who were on their way down to League One that season and utterly wretched). We drew 1-1 with Newport under Potter in 20/21 and scraped by on penalties, then only just limped past Blackpool. Last season we scraped past West Brom under Potter.

We did manage to lose to Charlton in a big cup tie not so long ago...

2017 by Lincoln who coincidentally had Waterfall in their team.

Strange stat.
We lost 3-1 to Lincoln in 2017 but went on to get promoted to the PL.
In 2003 we also lost 3-1 to Lincoln in the FA cup but got promoted at the Millenium stadium to the Championship, that season.

Newport County and Walsall have also knocked us out of the League Cup in recent years.

Nah, just tired of the cult of personality reducing everyone else (current or former) in the club to a bunch of losers.

I've watched most of these players for several years. I've seen the club play, I've noticed how it operates. Claiming that any specific manager or player is the reason why Brighton aren't likely to lose against Grimsby is not only thick as mince but belittling the capacity and efforts of the 100+ people involved in getting the club to where it is now.

Reason I didn't mention it was because the manager who is apparently the difference between Brighton being likely to beat Grimsby or not being likely to beat Grimsby was in charge of that particular game.

I've watched most of these players for several years. I've seen the club play, I've noticed how it operates. Claiming that any specific manager or player is the reason why Brighton aren't likely to lose against Grimsby is not only thick as mince but belittling the capacity and efforts of the 100+ people involved in getting the club to where it is now.

And again, weirdly hostile. If you think that the actual Brighton fans on here aren't fully aware of the inputs of those others you mention then it's perhaps you that's (what was it?) "thick as mince".

Let me spell it out for you: As Brighton fans, we have seen us lose repeatedly over the years to lower League opposition because we don't take Cup games seriously enough. De Zerbi does, that's why it's different. If you have 100+ employees all trying to win and your manager throws the Cup games to make sure we secure 12th in the League, do you think that doesn't make a difference?

I didn't blame RDZ for the loss against Charlton and I'm not going to pretend he is the reason Brighton won against Grimsby.

But he is part of the reason! He manages the side, coached the players chose the tactics and picked the team.
If GP or CH were still the manager and they had beaten Grimsby, it would be true for them as well.
The personality of the manager is important, e.g. the first time we got promoted to the top league we had a manager who instilled belief in his side. The first time we got to an FA Cup final we had a larger than life manager (who wasn't actually very good!) and that was part of the reason we got there. When we were at rock bottom, a manager came in to take us back from the abyss.
We now have a manager who many of the players are saying is the real deal, and they have bought into his philosophy. They are better judges of managers than you or I.

The difference between a good and a great manager comes down to the personality and how they get the players to go the extra mile for them.
(Shankly, Clough, Revie, Ferguson, Wenger, Pep, etc). It doesn't always last, but for a time, the personality of the manager shapes the direction of the club.

It may not last here and may indeed be a false dawn, but in this moment, RdZ is doing something special for my club, that no other manager has done.
