In real time I thought it was out, but if you look over the images in this thread then it was probably just in. Just. Or at worst inconclusive. The image we have that looks straight down the line shows why VAR went with the decision it did.
This. Marginal for sure and no conclusive camera angle (without a drone shot from directly above can’t be sure - even the small angle in the snapshot distorts the actual position). V similar to the Mitoma cut back.

I didn't even celebrate that goal it looked so offside.
Same here ... I remained sat in my seat as it immediately looked offside to me. Was surprised it took so long for VAR to look at it ... haven't seen replay yet.

It was quite amusing for a couple of seconds though when the decision had got through to the ref and he started to walk forward with the ball. Chap in front thought it was going to be given and jumped up cheering (on his own) ... only to see the ref then drop the ball where the kick was to be taken. We all had a giggle at the chaps expense :ROFLMAO:

The line belongs to the penalty area, same as if there is a foul and the contact is on the line it’s a penalty, as it’s deemed inside the box.

There was no infringement here, merely certain camera angles giving the illusion the ball was clearly outside the box, exactly the same as the Mitoma incident.

maybe a the end of the day he should have just kicked the bloody thing into touch
Yes he absolutely should have - poor decision making from Sanchez that could have cost us the game if he’d seen red which further evidences why Steele is more deserving of the shirt at the moment

And yet some just can't see that ... or don't want to see that!

He 100% picked the ball up outside the box, maybe a smidgen was on the line, it may not have been on the ground when he did so. The replay I saw did not freeze frame though, it was in real time.
All it needs is a ‘smidgen’ to be on the line (or where the line would be in the air) it doesn’t matter if 99.99% of the ball wasn’t.

On the line is inside the area.

If he had deemed to be outside, he would have been off for DOGSO (denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity) as there was an opposition player right next to him.

Hope that helps.

I dont think that one clearly shows that the entire ball is out of the area. Inconclusive. I bet if you could swing the camera round so its looking down the line there's every chance a small portion of the ball is still above it.

This is like that Mitoma one from the world cup, some camera angle made it look well out, but others showed it was actually in.
I think that’s it. Inconclusive

And this is maybe why Big Bobby Sanchez is not in the first team at the moment.

Every game seems to bring at least one major lapse of concentration.
The Palace drop being the worst and costing us two crucial points. (well that and an incompetent official)
And the Everton goal at Goodison, although it didn't matter, was really poor from him.
Yesterday, we probably would have won even with ten men, but if that had been a Premier League game it could have proved extremely costly.

I for one was surprised when Steele got the call, but Sanchez always seems to have that bit of casualness about him, especially with the ball at his feet. He just looks almost too relaxed.
A brilliant shot stopper but.....

Only 2 things I noted early in the game, Clifton and Orsi were both quite quick. I think Bobby didn't realise quite how quick Orsi was and so had to grab the ball earlier than he probably planned to. As you say, poor judgement or concentration, as playing percentages that has to be kicked into the stand. While part of the ball probably was overhanging the line and it was ok in the end, that is far too fine a margin and was a mistake.

Estupinan on the other hand realised Clifton was quick from the get go and dealt with him accordingly.

What I really don't get are the people saying it was "a bit inside the penalty area" AND that it was "a mistake from Rob Sanchez".

Some are really trying to get the best out of their two narratives: 1. Sanchez is a shite 2. Brighton would never get a dubious ref decision to their advantage

Sorry, you can't have that. If it is inside the penalty area, the timing from Rob is excellent (even perfection) and would have seen a such if Steele made it instead of scapegoat-of-the-year Sanchez.

Brighton would most likely have travelled home from Leeds with three points in the bag if Sanchez was in goal that day. Steele failed a very dangerous pass against Palace. If it was scapegoat-of-the-year messing that up, it would have been pointed out. But since God (De Zerbi) made the decision to play Jesus (Steeles temporary status among fans)... there is no questions. No criticism. No admitting that all people and all players make mistakes. Just further bashing of the evil Satan-guy (currently Sanchez).

If I didn’t know better I’d say that you were new on here.

From my perspective Sanchez had a good game, made one decent save and one brilliant reaction one. I am certainly not going to go along with “he had another aberration“ with the ball on the line.

Yeah but you've never been one who chases scapegoats, unlike a lot of other people.

Maybe you're not well integrated to modern hyper-individualistic society where success and failure in a team game comes down to one bloke.

Anyway, have to take the positives: people have been looking long and hard to find the real reason (person) Brighton aren't winning every single game and topping the league. They tried with Solly early in the season, Webster a few months ago until they finally found pleasure and relief in Sanchez.

I like Sanchez, you'll find posts from me defending him, and I also don't really criticise Potter's record with us. There was no narrative for me, just an observation that no goalkeeper would actually want to be handling the ball that close to it being outside the area.

Plenty of mistakes were made during the game. However, Sanchez lost the no.1 spot and needs to win it back. I think he is the better keeper of the two, but he is going to need to be error free to win that jersey back, as in a good competitive squad, players outside the team should feel they have a chance to get in it.

Its over for him in that case. There has never been any error free footballer and Robert Sanchez won't be the first one.

They showed the stills on the analysis and you could see the angle from behind the goal looked very obviously out, because of the perspective of the shot, but the angle from nearly directly in-line the ball was overhanging then line, which is INSIDE the box.

I don’t see much narrative in this thread really, unless I’m missing something, this whole thing is just trying to invent controversy, show me an angle from above/side that shows the ball is clearly out, there isn’t one.
