I’ve childhood memories of their Saturday afternoons covering minority to the UK sports/events such as The Tour De France (that’ll never catch on here) with Merckx and surfing from Hawaii. Glamour in a bigger world at that time. As well as some of the boxing greats …. commentated on by Reg Gutteridge.

WoS the first UK programme to show NFL games - must have been the early 1980's as the Steelers were winning everything!
I have vague memories of them showing the college football, specifically the Rose Bowl and Orange Bowl.
But I have much clearer memories of Ma GB allowing WoS on the telly when it was mostly commandeered by the parents. The tash and tan were clearly preferable to Frank Bough.

RIP - he was part of my Saturday afternoons growing up. Sitting down with my Dad to watch some obscure sport (including early NFL coverage), maybe then a bit of speedway, the ITV7 racing and then, after the half time scores, the wrestling.
To this day, if someone has a little tuft of grey hair at the front, I always refer to it as a Dickie Davies.

To be fair it simply shows an equality in cultural appreciation.

First there was David Coleman (1958 - 1968 BBC) then came Dickie (1968 to 1985 ITV). In these days of live sport and unlimited channels it's unbelievable that back then we had a few hours on a Saturday. Still cant work out how the wrestling always ended at 4:34 in time for the results at 4:40 (10 min 1/2 time back then as well).

I also loved BBC Sportsnight on Wednesday’s for boxing and football, and ITV aired highlights of magical European club games with the likes of Gerald Sinstadt commentating.
