[Albion] Remember when Tariq Lamptey was our next £50 million player?

I disagree. You make him sound very one dimensional; we have often seen him him play one-twos and put decent crosses in.

He was clocked as the fastest player in the world in 2020. That extra top end speed gave his game a very special dimension. I remember when he skinned Vardy, I hadn’t seen that many times at all.

He has gone from the fastest player on the planet to just another fast player. It seems that his acceleration has been affected by the injury as well as his top end speed as he is not dinking the ball around players and then using his acceleration to beat them nearly as much as he used too.

That said, he is still a great player, just not at the astonishing level he was pre-injury where he generally looked like our best player each match. Those away performances at Leicester and Newcastle were mind-blowing.

Nonsense. A few years ago there was a patch he was putting in dangerous cross after dangerous cross. The fact is a back 4 doesn't suit his style, until we revert to wing backs he's not going to be out first choice full back.
Have a look at this from 2:18 from the Arsenal match. It's still there, dribble, move at speed, link up, byline, great pull-back. I just think that he can't do it all the time as he has lost a little pace, and the opposition are more alert to the dangers than they were when he first burst on to the scene. And he's in a slightly different role.

He'll be fine.

I much prefer Veltman as the full back. Lamprey as wing back and or impact substitute
Yep. As a wing back/winger/impact Tariq is a threat. As a full back at the highest level, he's a liability atm. Not 10% as good as Veltman right now. Maybe he needs some coaching in Joel's dark arts & reading the game?

I agree 100% that he’ll be fine with us. It’s just that he is obviously not the same player he was before the injury.

In his early period with us, when discussing right backs for the England team, I heard a 5live pundit state that Lamptey will be better than the likes of TAA, Trippier, Walker and James. Now that he has lost that critical 10% of his speed, I no longer agree with that sentiment but I still think he could become the Albion’s best ever right back wrestling that honour from the fallen Bruno.

Looks likes getting back nearer to normal with the more game time he has, his minutes in the WC seemed to have helped his rehabilitation. This was his first 90 minutes in a PL game for a long while.

Me when Lamptey and Martin set off together(ish)

It as bad as that though, Martinelli was on his toes while Tariq was still facing upfield - onside and with the momentum. Tariq made up the gap and was mms away from nicking the ball away in the area (give some credit to Arsenal here: it was a terrific pass from Ostergaad and Martinelli is no slouch) Had he done so the narrative on here would be totally different. For the first goal he just made a bad choice and delayed a pass too long. There's nothing wrong with Lamptey that a decent spell in the side won't fix.

I thought he had a pretty good game, keeping tabs on one of the best players in the league for most of it. Not that concerned about the two things people are slating him for, considering his lack of starts for a while. Lost the ball in a bad position for the first goal but he won't be the first or last to do that under De Zerbi. He was simply trying to break clear - high risk but that's how RDZ likes it. It'll get us goals and we'll concede some that look sloppy. As for being beaten to the ball by Martinelli, who had a head start on to one of the best passes we'll see at the Amex this season... well, that's not going to happen often.

I do wonder if he will be converted in time into a new role. Playing in a 5 at the back suits him better than in a 4.

I wouldn't mind seeing him in a more advanced role even a no.10. His attributes give him a versatility that perhaps can be developed.

Reminds me of what happened to LuaLua after the Hartlepool injury - never quite the same player after it. Also reminds me of a Michael Owen interview for BT Sport where he said that he was never the same player again after an injury.

Lamptey was the quickest player in the league before his injury. A player dribbling will always be slower than a player chasing. I'm amazed that over 40 yards Lamptey was beaten in a sprint and it's not a worry to people. He's certainly not worth £50m anymore, let alone a guaranteed started.
