He doesn't need a new contract but I'm sure under the terms of the existing one he can be given a pay riseWell obviously a short contract would significantly lower a player's value, but I don't know if there becomes a limit where a longer contract no longer adds to the value (eg, after 4 or 5 years). But the point is, he wouldn't sign a new contract that doesn't offer him something useful, and given that Arsenal and Chelsea just tried to sign him, I wouldn't expect him to make it even harder to leave in the summer.
