I agree that Caicedo is far more than a 'defensive midfielder'. He and Ally Mac are both playmakers as well as tacklers and have unusual roles with play sometimes starting from behind them. Not everyone has the versatility to do that position justice.

If you can believe any of this guff, their Caicedo alternative Andre Onana has now told Chelsea he’s not interested in joining them. For once, their love of making all their transfer business public might have backfired. If Trossard sold for £20 million for two half seasons, the bill for Caceido FOR TEN SEASONS IS MUCH MORE MASSIVE! Even my initial thought of £185 million seems low.

Two and a half years left on his contract, apparantly. Surely some discussion about an improved contract will have been started - but if no agreement is forthcoming he can walk away for free in 2025.

So, it's a question of finding the baance between getting the most out of him playing for Brighton and getting the most possible wonga. Surely we can hold out this month - we'll get the same in the summer. After that, when? This time next year? - shame to break up the team half way through the season, but at least we'll have kept him a bt longer. End of the 2023-24 season would be my choice - still a year on his contract, so still a fairly hefty price.
