I guess the most frustrating thing about the USA game for many of us on here was it was just liking watching the Albion at the Amex over these past years. A team we expect to beat rocks up and plays reasonably well and we seem to lack any ideas /enthusiasm/ motivation to break them down and end up endlessly passing the ball from side to side across our backline - throw in a few bizarre substitutions and very below par performances from our better players and I could have been in the WSU !

And maybe some of us are proud of our nation but are indifferent to the English football team? Particularly with that palace goon in charge. I am in the happy (and admittedly shallow) place that I will celebrate if we actually win something but not care a jot if we don't.

Teams that grind out results, knowing that a draw is enough, do so by staying in control and dictating the pace of the game. That is not what we did yesterday. We were not control and could have quite easily conceded more than one.
Southgate is of the same school as CH (CH is by far and away the better of the two) where it’s very much a risk averse approach. To Southgate it’s about not conceding rather than scoring, unfortunately yesterday we very nearly screwed it up.

IMHO, Iran had a bit of a mare against us and we got lucky. They got their shit together for Wales and it showed.

I doubt that any of the other managers are worried about playing England as they know exactly what Southgate will do. Have a go for the first 15 mins then regardless of whether we have scored, defend and hope for a goal.

The one thing that worries me is the early England goal, as it will then be a case of everyone behind the ball and quite frankly we aren’t that good at it.

Southgate has made me fall out of love with the England team at the moment, which I find depressing. I’ve always enjoyed watching England in tournaments and always felt the pain of the inevitable failure. With the other exception of Hodgson I’ve always felt we had a chance.
Even after the early goal in the Euro final it was inevitable that we would lose because of his tactical ineptitude. I had a call shortly after the Euros, where the Italian attendee said they couldn’t believe how bad England were and that we played right into their hands. He also pointed out the we lost to one of the worse Italian teams in living memory.

we can win this but Southgate needs to get a new play book because this one’s shit.

Really…. Iran where crap, surprisingly crap I may add. If they had played the way they did against Wales it may well have been a different story. if England were so good why were we so crap against the Colonials, who haven’t had a great run up to the tournamen?

I'm not anti-English. I hope they win the World Cup. But my football passion is the Albion, not the England team. My interest is in Albion players not Tottenham, Liverpool, Everton players and others who I don't like week in and week out and don't even have to earn their place. I get that Southgate only wants to pick the players he trusts like any other manager. His job depends ultimately on results. I'll watch England and want them to win. But I'm more engaged with how Albion players do, hoping they don't get injured, wanting them to score goals or defend well or be creative, whatever their role. The two strands are that I hope the England team does well, but I don't really need to watch them. I hope the Albion players do well and I do want to watch them. Same as I used to watch Sully, Lawrenson, Grealish play for their country back in the day.

I was watching the game last night with my son and after 15 mins we just KNEW what sort of game it would be....boring, slow, predictable. We lasted until 30 mins, then sacked it off for the remainder

This team is not a strong comparatively than some folk think it is. The 2006 team was the best in my generation.

Southgate isn't the best tactically, but the team like him. And that's half the battle at this level.

He's not the best England Manager since Sir Alf Ramsay he's just the luckiest. (and just remember you support Whitehawk)

Yeah a normal goal return for the game against Iran would be 2-3 goals from the chances England had. Which is good obviously, but getting 6 goals from 7 shots on goal isn't going to happen every day. 6-2 against Iran was a fantastic result but the performance was merely.. good. And if you get 7 shots on goal against a not-so-good Iran, then you might just get 3-4 shots on goal against a slightly better team like the US.

And then you have to think what that would look like when playing against teams like Spain or France...

He doesn't play in his preferred and best position for City because of Kevin De Bruyne and Bernado Silva, not because of Mason Mount. Guardiola has still played him everywhere in midfield and up front just to get him in the team. He actually did play a few games in centre-midfield last year. Meanwhile, Foden's team-mate, the right back Kyle Walker last played at centre-back for City on 17/10/2020. He has played a total of four games in that position during his years at City. He never played a game at centre-back for Tottenham. Guess where Southgate will be playing him as soon as he is fit enough.
