What we need is some injuries to key players to force Southgate to change the team. We usually do well then (1986 and 1990) Nothing too serious, niggly is fine.
We did better in 2018 under Southgate than 1986 and better in Euro 2021 than either

Weary and leggy. I’m surprised we didn’t get beat. Why he doesn’t use his squad I don’t know. Bit of rotation to mix it up and be less predictable. Had the flair players on the bench who could have opened that lot up. Still, it’s a point and we should at least get into the next round.
Yes, that's where I'm at. It was the mirror image of the Iran game - no energy, no composure, no ambition, no goals.

But despite playing really badly, we didn't lose and almost as importantly didn't concede.

The teams that win the big tournaments often have a bad group game, but they don't let in many if any in doing so.

When the dust has settled, we'll still be in a good place.

Imagine being England manager and in a game like this not at any point thinking to put Foden on the pitch.
cant really see why he's taken Foden if he wont play him. like not playing Gerrard or Gascoigne. im not a Henderson knocker but knew where this was heading when he came on, just as we needed some energy to spark the game to life.

Indeed. But if we play like we did tonight again, we won't beat anyone else in this tournament.
And if we play like we did against Iran we’ll win it on one leg 🤷‍♂️

Tournament football needs a decent 90 mins in the knockouts but the group games need an element of game management, especially when it’s hot and there’s not much to do

Remember in the Euros we were flat against Scotland. No need to panic but there will be far bigger tests than tonight

I haven’t read this thread so apologies if fixtures, but watching England tonight made me realise how well RDZ (and to be fair GP) do at coaching playing out from the back. Southgate thought that was good according to his interview, yet we just saw the two CBs passing to each other. We never saw the CBs stepping out like Dunk and Webster do, and we never saw them passing to marked midfielders as we do.

England v Iran on todays performances and we'd have lost 2-0

Wales will be up for it. So will Iran . . .

England will scrape through, the Iran USA game could/should be the game of the group

Almost spat my beer out when Southgate said he was pleased with how we played out from the back. 🤣🤣

It's disappointing, but ultimately it isn't that big in the grand scheme of things and we'll very likely get through. Netherlands and Ecuador don't have much between them so there's not much riding on winning the group anyway.

Wonder if we'd set up differently had Wales got a result, that was a real far cry from the Iran game where we got forward in numbers and just went for it. Sterling, Saka, Kane, Bellingham, Mount barely got a kick today.

I don't get these 'stinking the place out' performances but maybe there's some logic to it? If it was the case though, why play Kane for the whole game when he clearly isn't fit? Idk. Looking forward to Southgate taking over at a PL side though, as that will be one less spot for us to worry about.

Or maybe you mean "iechyd da", FYI it sounds nothing like 'yaki'
You’re probably right but we’ll need some confirmation from that red blooded Welshman @Solid at the back

Good to see there’s a Derby fan who lives in Wales on a Brighton message board thread about an England game being pedantic about a capital I and lower case l though. Good use of a Friday

If Southgate had thrown up all over the late Queen there'd still be people sticking up for him.

The tournament is so much more enjoyable when folk don't let themselves get stressed out over England. We are a reasonably decent (yet over-hyped as ever) team. Quarter Finals material. A bit of luck could take us further- as it could for a good number of other teams.

You cant beat knock out games as that showed how poor entertainment can be in tournament games. With that point we now have to avoid a 4-0 plus defeat against Wales to qualify

How many managers have we had since Sir Alf though ? And even he missed out on a World Cup.

This team is not a strong comparatively than some folk think it is. The 2006 team was the best in my generation.

Southgate isn't the best tactically, but the team like him. And that's half the battle at this level.
