I struggle to understand why they do it at any game. To dress like this for this world cup shows a severe lack of foresight, understand and empathy.

Cant say I've ever really understood why anyone would want to dress up like a Crusader anyway tbh.
Theres a famous Las Vegas Raiders fan who runs the fan-club over here - and he wears that outfit to every game he goes to, & calls himself "Crusader Raider". Apart from being English, I cant see what relevance it has to a Pirate themed franchise?!

Its all just a bit odd to me.

Fans wearing crusader outfits in a Muslim Country is extremely ignorant or worse, callously insensitive, of the very deep cultural and historical divides between Judeo-Christian civilisations and Muslim countries. Appropriating costumes like this shows not only completely ignorance but is potentially dangerous for everyone involved.

This WC is becoming more and more fractured on social, cultural and religious ideological grounds and marred by controversies on a grand scale - what it means for the future of the global game remains to be seen. 🙁

Whilst wearing Crusader garb is harmless against most teams it does seem a bit crass to dress in it in the Middle East.

Understandable that it's been banned.

This isn't new, at Germany 2006 there were posters at the airport telling people not to take anything war related.

There was absolutely LOADS of it out there :lolol:

For balance I saw plenty of Germans waving the Iron cross at us, everyone took it in good spirits and there was no aggro at all. I remember talking to some lads in Stuttgart who had the flags and the WW1 helmets with the pointy top, we had a laugh about it and a chat about the footy.

I think if a group of German fans had turned up at Wembly in 1966 wearing Nazi uniforms and plastic M42s tucked under their arms, there probably would have been an outcry. (I used to like German WW2 signia myself and actually was threatened with a gun by a really pissed off policeman when on a school trip to Cologne in the 70s for wearing a German issued Great Coat down the street with all its original insignia on!) - so, yeah, people are still really sensitive to this stuff.

Given the recent (and ancient) history of armed conflicts between the Western and Islamic states, which they already interpret as Western Imperialism, I don’t think wearing German metal helmets (or even Great Coats) equates to the same scale of inflammatory or politically charged behaviour as turning up in a Muslim Country wearing the costume that represents nearly 300 years of conflict that many Muslims see continuing today in Western foreign policy.

“Among followers of Islam, however, the Crusaders were regarded as immoral, bloody and savage. The ruthless and widespread massacre of Muslims, Jews and other non-Christians resulted in bitter resentment that persisted for many years. Even today, some Muslims derisively refer to the West’s involvement in the Middle East as a “crusade.”

There’s no question that the years of warfare and conflict brought by the Crusades had an impact on Middle East and Western European nations for many years, and they still influence political and cultural views held today.”

Personally, a lot of reaction to what various people are wearing in Qatar seems ridiculous and OTT to me (including the banning of rainbow armbands on the pitch ) but it’s not helpful either imo, to ignore the cultural sensibilities that are obviously heightened at the moment on all sides.

Although why anyone would want to go to a football match dressed like a pillock is beyond me.

The Crusades were led by the French, with French knights, and King Richard only spoke French, rarely visiting Britain, which is why Prince John tried to nick the throne.

you can’t take Qatar to book over human rights records etc and generally being stuck in the Middle Ages and in the next breath not understand why they would be pissed off with people being dressed up as crusaders. It’s stupid and shows a lack of awareness.

During the first gulf war the press were told not to mention crusade or crusaders for this very reason.

If the World Cup was in Spain and the Muslim supporters turned up in Seville dressed as Moors I would put good money on plenty of Spaniards being very pissed off. To some the Moor Invasion was like last week.

Saying all that I don’t believe they had the crusader gear confiscated, just the swords during the match. Obviously haven’t seen the carnage an English fan can do with a bottle top!

So we get crap over a sudo incorrect fancy dress fun football get up because it resembles a 1000 year old uniform , so we are the bad guys . They have atrocious current / ongoing Human Rights issues against thousands as we speak , and you agree with their hurt feelings :wrong:

Anyone who thought it was reasonable to turn up at matches in an Arab / Muslim country fancy-dressed as someone who raped, pillaged and occupied Arab lands, is a special level of stupid, and should consider themselves lucky if they are only refused entry to the games.

Utter pricks.
Agreed. On that basis, crusader costumes should be banned from Portugal too.

To the guy on the street the garb is almost the same as Knights Templar .
The Knights Templar were a Roman Catholic military order under the Pope. Nothing to do with Britain or England.

Yes i know i looked it up , but still struggle to see how a 1000 year old inaccurate childlike costume compares to what they are doing as i type this to you , perhaps you could quantify the difference between their hurt feelings and the actual DEATHS of those that have and continue to suffer - no biggy take your time :)
