Millwall away Boxing Day 2007. 3-0
Brighton just didn’t turn up, and there was a dressing room revolt, with a player ringing Radio Sussex after the game.
I couldn’t leave because I’d gone by coach.

Albion v Burnley 1-3
A deliberate blatant handball totally ignored by the ref, and whilst our players were protesting, a very mild tackle on Ashley Barnes, who went down like a felled tree, resulting in a penalty tha he scored.
I got so angry, I said I’m not paying good money for such blatant cheating by the opposition and the referee, I left on 75 minutes.

A close third, away to Middlesbrough when Mike Dean sent Stevens off.

I believe my experience was 87. The year we went up from Div 3 with Sunderland.

Yep, 87-88 season. The game was March 1988, this was my second Albion game.

20/11/2005, the scum at the Withdean.
Day after my birthday, absolutely hanging out of my arse after a brutal night on the town, and to lose the game in the 90th minute, awful day.

Coventry away, New Year's Eve, 2011. A shitty drive to a dump of a city, to watch us play like twats in a half empty stadium with no atmosphere.

The 5-0 at Palace was the pits. We hadn't played them for 13 years (!) and they completely demolished us. If it wasn't for Kuipers it woulda been 10. Being kettled for an hour (or more?) outside the ground and then escorted down south London's finest back streets to Norwood Junction made it even worse. I was supposed to be going to see one of my favourite bands that evening but the kettling meant I was going to be late and I was in such a lousy mood I just went home instead to complete a thoroughly miserable day.

The 4-0 defeat at 'home' to Darlington in the cesspit that is Gillingham wasn't exactly a bundle of laughs either. The team we had that season (Ashley Neal, anyone?) was actually far worse than the one that escaped relegation at Hereford the previous year. We were only saved from the drop because of what was happening at Doncaster. My God, we were awful.

1995 Crewe away, 4-0 down after about 30 minutes (and that’s the way it stayed)
We were so bad at half time we pleaded with the guys on the gates to let us go to the local pub, but the stewards wouldn’t let us leave and we had to stay until about 70mins I finally got out.

Brighton 0 Doncaster 0 at Priestfield. “Fans United 2”. The worst professional football match ever played.

Michael Mahoney-Johnson’s infamous 45 minutes.

It is no exaggeration to say it was probably two of the worst professional football teams to ever play in the football league. No shots - on target or otherwise.

Finished 23rd and 24th respectively.

I remember coming away from the game feeling genuinely depressed.

God that game was so poor in quality. I took my son to his first ever game, think he was about 2/3 and remember taking a little food bag with us which included a mini coke can, when I opened it for my son to have a drink, was suddenly surrounded by 4 Of Kent's finest Stewards threatening to throw us out as we breached their strict rules of bringing your own drink in They were told in no uncertain way by all the fans around us to 'get a life' and we stayed. Obviously did not have a major effect on my son as he is still today an avid fan. Think that was the game that Donny had a keeper who was playing park football the week before and we did not even have a shot.

Also - Millwall (away) 1966. Unsegregated crowd (at the bloody Den !!) We came back from 0-2 to 2-2. My bobble hat was yanked off my head, I turned round and was punched on the nose. After stemming the bleeding, we conceded a third to complete a wonderful day.

Yes, I went to that one on my own as a 14 year old and naively ended up on the Millwall terraces. Keeping my head down and blue and white scarf on, I got away with it. First time I had seen fans armed with pots and pans, and encountered a line of parked cars after the game each with a window smashed.

Stoke in the FA cup in the Poyet L1 promotion season.

We were top of the league, got to the 5th round of the cup after beating two championship teams. Drawn against the Pulis' Stoke team who were the complete antithesis of Poyet's style, the sort of team we'd been taking the piss out of in the league. We were so full of optimism that we could beat a PL team, we were nearly invincible that year.

We were absolutely schooled, lost 3-0, the Britannia was freezing and Stoke was a shithole. I couldn't wait to get home.

As a relative newbie (started going to games in the early 90s) who wasn't around Brighton much at weekends for a while I've missed a lot of these being told about. The FA Cup defeat to, I think Mansfield at the Withdean felt quite grim. If my memory is right they were bottom of League Two at the time, hadn't won an away game all season, possibly hadn't won any game for a while. I'd decided not to go for a big night out in London with old mates to watch that thinking it'd be great to see us win and spent a lot of it questioning my life-choices.

Agree with most of those suggested already. I’d add Stoke away in the fa cup under Poyet. Ankergren in goal, 3-0 down after 20mins. We just didn’t bother. And it’s always cold in Stoke.

The defeat against 9 men Walsall at Withdean is one that is burned into memory for all time. As a general statement, pretty much every ‘home’ game at Gillingham can be lumped in there too, but the 4-0 defeat to Darlington is probably right up there. For more recent times, the 6-0 hammering at Upton Park was a shitshow. 3-0 down after about 15 minutes and one of the few times I’ve considered making a very early exit.

Torrential rain the day of the 4-0 loss to Darlington as well. It was Bonfire Night I think. We took a family of one of our kid’s school friends for probably their only ever football match. I can remember the mum wincing at the replica shirt her daughter borrowed from mine !
So that one, yes. Also a 3-0 down at HT at home to Oxford at the Goldstone in the early ‘90s and Palace 5-0 of course.

This. Remember both and Richard Littlejohn even asked for any of the handful of Albion fans travelled to Gillingham that night to call the phone in and answer simple question…”Why?” (did you bother to go!) Depressing times, hopeless in every sense.

Yes, my only redeeming memory of that night was we had a decent time in the nearby Harvester beforehand. As you say, shite night!

Away to Sunderland 1989. About 100 of us in the open corner of Roker Park as the rain came in horizontally from the North Sea. Too wet and windy to light a cigarette and even the pre-match beers weren't keeping us warm. Still hadn't dried out by the time we got back to the Flying Scotsman and we lost 1-0 to a goal that was 10 yards offside.
