I'm not his biographer, but I'd always assumed he wrote his own stuff. There's often collaberations involved, but I'd be surprised to learn he wasn't the writer of his own songs.

'Typically' Bernie wrote lyrics and Reg put all the right notes in all the right places.

Like Bowie, mid 70's he had a superb band and raised the bar with them. Great songs, well recorded and superb live.

It was peak rock era.

Can't think of anything listenable since I'm still standing, which is naff, but good in its own charlie fuelled kitsch OTT 80's way.

Musically, Lyrically, Vocally, Elton is Johnny Crumplin to Stevie's Bruno

If only he hadn't answered the door when McCartney suggested Ebony and Ivory

Bernie Taupin wrote all the lyrics and Elton wrote the music. They've composed together for over 50 years (apart from a 2 year break from 74 to 76). They may even decompose together in a few years time.

His output has slid over the years still some gems though The One, Sleeping with the Past, the Captain and the Kid...

I’m not a fan of his music but Elton John is definitely talented.

There does seem to be 3 questions asked by the OP though
Talented?
Brilliant?
One of the best?
I’m guessing the yes vote is for talented.

For many years Taupin wrote the words.

For many years Taupin wrote the words.

He always has except for a few breaks and work with other lyricists.

I don't think they technically work "together". Taupin basically writes a complete set of lyrics (effectively a poem) and Elton puts it to music.

They've never argued and I've always put that down to the fact they are rarely in same room together.

Saw him at Wembley circa 75. He was headline. On the bill were The Eagles, The Beach Boys, Joe Walsh, Chakka Khan and Stackridge.

Thousands (including me) walked out during BBBBenny.BBBBenny.BBBBenny.BBBenny... (etc) Tw@t.

This is good though.

Ben Folds Five - supremely talented. As was/is Barenaked Ladies lead singer Steven Page.

It's the classic comparison stuff going on though, well, Elton John sings and plays the piano - he's nothing compared to xyz. It's nonsense. I love good musicians including Stevie Wonder (mentioned above as the "right answer").

Variety is the spice of life and I'm in my 30's, so Elton's heyday wasn't and isn't something I experienced.

I simply saw him live and know his music and think he's actually really actually bloody good.

Yeah I imagine Elton John is an absolute ****ing nightmare professionally.
