Went down to Worthing seafront an hour ago and said a fond farewell to Worthing Pier just in case...fully expect the landing stage to have blown a few deck plates by 2pm , possibly worse.

Reason for extra fuel was because the pilot didn’t want to refuel in Gatwick….not sure why this was.

If an aircraft is positioned on stand the refueler (bowser) is just a truck that connects from underground pipes to under wing.

Aircraft, during high winds act as a huge sail and can lift up and move. I've witnessed it many times. Usual practice is to park the aircraft nose to the wind. Added to this the aircraft don't normally park onto the stand to avoid hitting it.

When refuelling in these circumstances a tanker is used but also the aircraft needs to be connected to a tug, to hold it steady.

Lack of tankers and tugs would lead to delays.

Extra fuel would also be on board for contingency.

thought that story about Man City flight odd in this respect, they abandon landing to fly 30 miles towards the wind? slightly different direction, not much.

Watch the live Big Jet TV video I posted above, as they explain some of this.

They get three chances to get it down at Heathrow and then they have to go somewhere else. For the small pan-European jets, they may well go back to where they came from.

I'm not sure about all the BA 777s that are currently aborting their landings as they've all come across the Atlantic. I think Manchester might be an option as the winds are as bad up North yet.

It turns out that Big jet Tv on a windy day is more addictive than many class A drugs. Planes getting within metres of the tarmac then nooooooo. That Lisbon plane got so close.

Just got back from walking the dogs. Went from Mile Oak Farm which seemed quite calm upto Trueliegh hill, boy it was very windy up there knocking me sideways. The dogs couldn't care less. Keep safe all

A big factor would be the direction of the runway. If they can't land due to strong cross winds, at one airport, they may be perfectly happy landing at an airport a few miles away, if the runway there is laid out in a different direction, meaning they with a headwind / tailwind rather than a cross wind.
