We take for granted how accessible our MPs are. The public being able to have a face to face meeting with their representative as an essential part of any functioning democracy. I hope this won’t change in light of this event.

Let’s hope we can cast aside whatever divisions we have and hope the gentleman pulls through,

Brighton factually.....
I'm 100% pro choice, but I don't hate British folk with the opposing view.

Tone it down, there are reports that his own life prospects are slim or worse.

This.

Also 100% pro choice, as with many things, they end up being them and us, pick a side and the other is wrong full on hatred.
Communication and compromise is the only way forward, the them and us end result is exactly this kind of attack.

Sad.

Whether you agree with him or not, the simple fact is that he has been voted to represent this constituency and is working to that end representing the people of his constituency. The fact that this has put him in danger is absolutely terrible. Hope and pray that he recovers.

Who would be an MP?

Let's hope they get this nutjob and hope David, is okay, a 69 yr old man unarmed trying to do his best for the country, whether you agree with him or not.

It makes you sick.

Shit, first Jo Cox, now Amess both attacked at a constituency surgery. Are we going to have to have security details for all MPs now? State of this world.

We don't know if this is political in nature, but Cox's attack was. Its what happens when people get so fervently on one side or the other of politics that it becomes tribal, it becomes something we personally try and defend. I know I have been guilty of this at times. You and I will keep it to words and rhetoric, but others pick up on our language and passion and defend our 'cause' with violence.

More than just those two recently

"The incident will raise further concerns about the safety of MPs, who routinely hold advice surgeries at which anyone can turn up. In 2016, the Labour MP Jo Cox was stabbed to death by a far-right terrorist shortly before holding a surgery.

In 2010, another Labour MP, Stephen Timms, was stabbed twice at a constituency surgery by a student radicalised by online videos. In 2000, Andrew Pennington, an assistant to the Liberal Democrat MP Nigel Jones, was stabbed to death as he tried to protect Jones from an attacker who stormed his constituency office armed with a sword."

Consistently voting against LGBT rights, measures to address child poverty, measures to help disabled and vulnerable people, woman’s rights etc doesn’t strike me as someone representing all of his constituency?

This type of language needs to stop

Very true, I have been banging on about this for yonks on here, let alone life.

There is too much divide and no ability to tone it down, all this political hate speech on social media, is what is truly vile.

Nobody represents all of their constituents (and I would be against him on every one) but all of those things were well known, and he still returned a majority

Saddened but somehow not surprised that some people can't leave politics out of it for just a few hours as an elected representative lies fighting for his life after being stabbed in public.

Are you really serious, take the chance to edit this while you can?

Someone's quite possibly dying and you look up their voting record.

No. I’ve been aware of him for a long time. He’s quite a vocal MP.

That's an interesting point. I don't think they do, his record is similar to Dim Tim my MP . . . . not things he shouts about really, his MP work and voting tow the party line and his/their interests, and his local persona and 'chariddee' work are somewhat different.

lest we forget 1/3 of the population is a 'majority'

It does if he had it in his pre election blurb, he has also represented Southend for many years so surely his constituents knew what his thoughts are on those matters.
Either way you don't deserve to get stabbed because of it you just don't vote for him.
After Jo Cox, it seems silly and reckless to allow people to just walk in to his surgery, I am not saying that they should have security guards and metal detectors but surely have a locked door and allow appointments in only.
I have only said this because the report I have read said the attacker just barged in, if not true then apologies will be dished out.
I went to see my MP once, made an appointment but just walked in where there was a secretary, then walked through another door, after giving my name, where he was sat in a room.
