[Albion] Potter arguably worse than Hyypia

Ask yourself honestly why either Hyypiä or Potter would be given the Albion gig in the first place - apart from maybe being the pounshop option. Just maybe ask yourself what that short list of three candidates must 'of' looked like...

Wow. What utter bollocks, and a total lack of understanding of what the Albion are about these days.

Hyypia resigned, you can't support a manager that has lost belief in himself.

Thank heavens he did, it is the one glaringly obvious mistake our supremo has made in recruiting him, he was totally out of his depth.

But Bloom has got the all the other ones right, all a bit left field, never the most obvious choices, but Poyet, Garcia, Hughton and Potter have all been successful for their tenures.

I do wonder if Blooms seeming ruthlessness towards Hughton stemmed from his lack of ruthelessness towards Hyypia?...... certainly seemed he was keen to back further a manager who was totally failing in the then present and who had run out of ideas.

He didnt make the same mistake the next time.

Potter actually ended up being the £3,000,000 poundshop option - thats what it cost TB to stump up in compo to prise GP and his backroom team from Swansea. I'm sure there would've been much cheaper (out of work) options on the shortlist, but Potter was far from being a cheapo appointment.

Anyway, as for this thread...I can remember reaching my own "Potter OUT" moment during a home game v Wolves, when we came in losing 1-3 and had been absolutely CLUELESS. Weird selections, shambles of a game. I'm sure I was calling for his head in a Whatsapp group at half time, all my creeping doubts collided with my frustration and I'd had enough. But then we fought back to draw 3-3, so I had a rethink.

I'm fickle, you see.

What a spiteful forum this is becoming lately.

Quite pathetic really.

The bounce has received more attention than the frankly stupid original thread

The pre season against Saints was enough for me to decide that were in serious trouble with Hyypia

It's just another tedious bounce taking the mood of the time out of context. I'll say it again, I was never Potter Out but all these bounces do is drive people away from this site. Varying opinions on the whole should be welcomed. Try and take them apart AT THE TIME if you see fit, not months later. It's cretinous.

Bouncing posts well out of their original context is the lowest of the low. An opinion based on facts today does not invalidate an opinion formed based on the facts of the time. At the time this was posted, we didn't look like being able to score a goal - let alone get a win. We've changed goalkeeper since then and we've performed far better on a match by match basis and climbed the table. The only crime of this thread is that the individuals didn't look into the future and correctly predict how it would turn out.

Maybe Hyypia would have turned it around as well, but he didn't get the chance that Potter did. That's the difference. Well, that and Hyypia didn't have any of the necessary tools to succeed. He had an awful squad with very poor future planning and only got one transfer window. There are plentiful differences but ultimately, fair play to Potter for turning it around.

So, what we're really saying is, to Bozza and the mods... why'd you let it bounce?!

This. Call it as you see it while you're seeing it. So many Clevor Trever cherry-picking after-timers. Sorry, but at the time GM WAS One-In-Ten-Glenn. Suck it up after-timers

But people were calling it as they saw it, saying Potter was the right man for the job, despite some of the poor results

When exactly would it have been ok for them to say “told you so”, one month, two months, six months?

As I said when I bumped this I came across this thread purely by accident and didn’t want or expect it to create any fan division.

Never. We might never win another game. We might win the league. Gloating is an ugly and dangerous thing to do.

I so wanted to reply to what you are with 'well the first 4 letters are right' for comedy value. But I didn't want to cause offence, even by accident.:lolol:

Only a complete DICK could start a thread like this .
In 55 years this is the best squad/manager/coaching set up ive ever seen

What this thread should show is that form is temporary. We were underachieving then and are overachieving now. People talking like it is now a proven fact that Potter is a genius manager as as off the mark as those claiming he was as bad a Hyppia past year. The answer is somewhere in the middle. He is a good manager with great potential.

Perhaps we should just enjoy the ride and not feel the need for bickering, olive branches and I told you so's.

Which begs the question. If it was that obvious to you, why wait until now to make your point? You could have pointed out the error of his ways to the OP back in December 2020, when he posted this.

I don't have a problem with old thread bounces, in fact I quite enjoy them, although some of the rebukes can get a bit personal. When things aren't going well, it is easy to put the boot in. If you are prepared to do that, you need to be prepared for when your words are thrown back at you. Interesting thing here is that the thread starter just made some interesting points of comparison.

It’s partly down to patience……..like any club we have fans who have loads, and fans who have none, with the majority somewhere in the middle. Watch what happens at Newcastle now - based on some SM stuff and radio phone-ins, they have some expecting to be top 4 by Christmas and Champions of Europe next season. When they are actually in the bottom 3 at Christmas they’re going to have a divide way bigger then we’ve had over Potter. Potter was always going to need a lot of time and several windows to implement the ‘plan’ to any notable effect, only now are we seeing the tangible (points) benefits.

Indeed. Easy with hindsight innit.

I am enjoying the ride, but that's because I think Potter is about as good as we can expect as a manager. Was saying the same at the time this thread was started, and pointing out there was a well-documented discrepancy between performances and results (which might now have swung the other way, but I doubt that'll last).

This.

the reason I stuck with him last year (I must admit I wobbled to the fence a couple of times) was that it seemed he (and we) had enormous potential. This seems to be the best way to compete with our limited resources (much more preferable to Watford's extreme strategy I feel). We were right to hold our nerve last year.

Having said that, I don't think we should be getting ahead of ourselves after our start. Exciting prospective season though.

When EXACTLY was this, out of interest? The records are all that matter, and Glenn Murray's returns in league games, in his first spell were unfailingly impressive:

07/08 9 in 21 (L1)
08/09 11 in 23 (L1)
09/10 12 in 31 (L1)
10/11 22 in 42 (L1)

then on his return

16/17 23 in 45 (Champ)
17/18 12 in 35 (PL)
18/19 13 in 38 (PL)

I'll guess you'll counter, that your nonsense moniker referred to goals against chances (rather than appearances)
No idea what the actual stats are there, or even what is actually a reasonable return on that metric. What I do know, is that whatever it is, Murray's record will stand up against all but the very best.

Hindsight doesn't come into it unless there was a time when you thought Potter was as out of his depth in the PL as Hyypia was in the Championship. I accept that you and a few others may have thought that, most of us didn't. Hyypia tried to play a style of football that our tortoise defence was not capable of. As mentioned earlier in the thread this became apparent in the pre season against Saints when they ripped us apart. Full backs with no pace cannot be stuck on the half way line and expect anything but a tonking against pacy forwards
