You can spend £80-100 on a decent stylus and cartridge.

That's about a minimum price for a decent cartridge, and they can go all the way up to quite silly prices.

For turntables, the choice is immense, and there is a thriving second hand market, but not much value to be had. Vinyl is still very much alive in the hearts of hifi enthusiasts.
Look for anything with a three point suspended chassis, belt driven platter from a mechanically remote motor, and the ability to change tonearms.
Names I remember from my past obsession include Rega, Thorens, Linn, Oracle, Mitchell... but there are many, many more.

Once you have your turntable, you need to place it on a rigid support, either a shelf or table, most people spike the table legs, to give a solid conection to the floor.
...but you also have to decouple the turntable from the surroundings a little. I use a little blu-tac under the turntable supports.

Much has been written about whether vinyl sounds better than CD, and vice versa.
It's mainly about opinions, but the fact remains, that in the process of digitisation to CD format, some of the sound is thrown away. Science says that all that is thrown away is inaudible, but I think that some music/sounds are felt rather than simply heard with the ears.

As a rule of thumb, CD sounds far better than vinyl on cheaper systems. On more expensive hi-fi vinyl sings.

Have carefully looked after my records bought as a kid and man, and still play them occasionally on fully working Technics linear tracking deck; 31 years old!

Will invest in a Rega deck, when I get round to it.

Haven't added any records in 15+ years. Since then cd's.

Still own cassettes (my own recordings from crackly FM radio in the 1980's and early/mid 1990's, have a HiFi player that fully works, but never really use this.

One of the main reasons that vinyl sounds 'warmer' than CD is due to low frequency 'rumble' caused by the physical action of the stylus being in contact with the vinyl.
I remember a certain early CD DJ unit by Vestax had a vinyl emulation e.q. effect button to attempt to readdress the sonic shortfall.
I still am the happy owner of of x 2 technics turntables, & a whole wall of vinyl.

Just found this thread again. I've got really into vinyl recently, it really does make you appreciate music more than downloads and CDs. Does anybody have a copy of Toto's Africa on a single or the album Toto IV which they'd be willing to part with?

Strange that someone has bounced my thread as I started buying vinyl a couple of months back. So far only a few pieces to see how I get on and as I do not have a record player with me I listen to the digital version whilst looking at the 12" packaging. But it is such a different experience to CDs and the way records and their sleeves are made today is quite wonderful.

A friend of mine managed to find a player for just £5 the other day!

One of the main advantages with vinyl is the price, surfing the charity shops around Horsham I have bought 25 singles and LPs in the past week alone all for under a tenner (particular bargain: Queen's A night at the Opera for 50p  ) and have discovered some brilliant music. Had never heard the Moody Blues' music before yet after buying Octave I'm desperate for more.

A couple of cracking tunes from Quantic (as per usual), but check out what he's playing them on

Apparently it's a...1940s Neumann AM-131 record lathe, which he has personally restored back to working condition.

I have a large collection of records that I have not played for about four years, it would love to put them to cd so I can listen to them in the car, I can not be arsed putting them on the computer first etc, can anyone recommend a record player with a CD player included that can record lp to cd without wires, cables or farting about. Cheers in advance

For years I've been using a pioneer pdr 509 cd recorder as just another seperate in my hi-fi system. Great little machine for slave recording duties, ok for playback too if you want, but I don't use it as my first choice cd player. I suppose they still sell cd recorders?

Edit to the post above:

I had a look around to see if CD Recorders are still available, and found that Teak still do one. However, having re-read your post, I now see you don't want a seperate and fanny around with cables. So I found this all in one on Amazon from Teak ,http://www.amazon.co.uk/Teac-Turnta...7376&sr=8-7&keywords=turntable+to+cd+recorder. I've no idea on quality. For that price you're clearly not getting a decent cd player or turntable but it would do the 'all in one' job you're after I suppose. Not sure what a search on specialist sites might turn up.

Just found a tutorial video for it too :)
