The Simple(ish) answer if you want cars to stay out of the town is to set up park and rides so you convert :

Roedean pitch and putt
The Green up the middle of the Avenue
Withdean Park
some of Hove Park

into car parks, charge £3 a day and run a non-stop free bus service to the town centre.

London Road car park is 8 quid of 9 hours ( I think ) - OK you have a short walk to the centre but much better value and the NCP rip off ( how else do you think the CEO maintains his boat ? ).

The college car park off trafalgar street is £5 all day sat and sun.......

A Facebook group just popped up on my timeline, full of people ready to vote out the Greens because they want to drive everywhere they want and to park cheaply. Ultimately a magnet for morons.
Joined. Thanks for the heads up.

Abort, retry, fail
I did have another paragraph in there about allowing tradesmen, delivery, sending the taxis round the back of the station (cleaning up the front of the station so it is not cluttered with taxis, bringing back tuk tuks, more shared spaces (like New Road) and not a blanket ban across the whole city, but I don't know where that went.

Average Joe? Normal, median, the norm, an everyday regular kind of guy of gal, what most people are like in other words? That is what democracy is all about, listening to the wishes and opinions of the majority, not riding roughshod over the electorates wishes like Kwikrap and his cronies are repeatedly doing.

Magnet for morons you say? Seeing as 'average Joe's' are the people joining and supporting this pressure group, does your opinion of them as morons demonstrate an inability to mix well with others?

I was referring to people wishing to vote out a party solely on the basis that they believe them to be anti-car and on that matter alone.

My ideal is mainly targeted towards those who make unnecessary journeys.

Create a better park and ride system, stop B&H buses using their passengers to subsidise their other arms and give greater incentives to car shares (I wonder how many single occupant cars head towards the AMEX offices/hospital).

The Old Steine could be a quality bit of open space, but who wants to lounge about round the fountains when they are surrounded by cars all through the warm Spring and Summer months?

If the council wanted to come up with a scheme to use that space better, and provide an alternative for the traffic, then great. But they just seem intent on making anti car decisions for the sake of it. The 20mph scheme has to be the worst idea I've ever heard of. What was the point of it?

If the Greens really wanted a car free city centre we would have one now - but that would cost a lot of money and leave an even bigger hole in the budget when they lost all the fines and parking fees they make millions from.

If they Greens really wanted safe cycling across the city they would stop building cycle lanes and bus stops that make it difficult for cars to get around without coming into conflict with bikes and other road users.

When a true green practical and reliable electric car becomes available they will welcome it with open legs like the whores they are in order to tax and charge it to park in the city centre.

Its the car with all its pollution, congestion and safety issues that give the greens their power - without it there isn't any other reason to vote for them.

The council is predicting (and hoping)the building of the i360 tower will increase parking revenues to help pay for it.

You can vote Green till your balls turn blue but the chances of a car free city centre in Brighton are zero.

Brighton - In your face
Is like to see the correlation between the Green council and these charges, and whether they were planned before the greens got in. The Greens are the NSC Barnes, a cheap scapegoat, that's all.

It's a bit safer, innit? Drive slower and your braking distance decreases.
Sorry, I was hoping someone would fall into that trap.

When speed cameras were being put around the country, the most dangerous roads and trouble spots were supposed to be identified, and the cameras were supposed to slow motorists down and reduce accidents and serious injuries in those locations. So the most dangerous roads in Brighton & Hove were identified, and speed cameras put in place. Fast forward a few years, and all the roads with speed cameras keep their 30mph limits, and all the other roads get 20mph limits, so now we're supposed to believe that the opposite was true - that actually they were the safest roads after all, and the most dangerous roads were all those that they didn't put speed cameras on

It's a complete joke.

Can you explain why one of the most densely "green" voter areas of Brighton (Hanover) doesn't have any parking meters or permit parking despite having some of the narrowest, overcrowded roads with cars parked under 1 mtr from front doors?

Hanover is closer to the town than areas on the outskirts of the city that do have restrictions and permits but if you can find a space round there you can park for free yet loads of "greens" live there?

I'd start with worrying about the cars around there before blocking off access to the coast road which is one of only four roads that cross the city

I'd like to meet the unchained muppet who designed the changes to the Seven Dials roundabout.

WTF was he/she on at the time? Money would have been better spent on hospital paintings.

What gets me is that you can drive all you like at 20mph and it will be safer going in a straight line but as soon as you turn left you will get hit in the passenger door by a cyclist traveling at 27MPh who won't have sen you indicating and is effectively overtaking you on the inside and guess what .... it will be your fault!

The 20MPH thing only works when traffic is flowing but in busy times it actually creates congestion and makes it more dangerous because bikes end up travelling faster. And when its peak time its even worse because there are buses and

You can see this in action in Car Free north Street or Western Road - some cyclists here are moving so fast that pedestrians, taxis and buses have a hard job seeing them in time and whilst I'm on the subject if North Street is 20MPH why don't the buses have to keep to it?

Its lovely now - I'm sure people would be lounging on the island and singing Kumbya my lord if it wasn't for the cars driving round it

All it needs is a statue of Jason Kitkat in the middle and it will become a shrine and people will pilgrimage there when he has saved the city

Maybe this was in jest, but if not, how can turning 4 pieces of greenland into a concrete parking area with the sole purpose of keeping cars out of a city centre be a good idea?

I follow the page, some of the stuff thy spout is crap, but you will never have a happy medium trying to keep car drivers and cyclists happy, having done both recently, where I do security at the Swann inn before match days, I tend to watch the game, being a lovely day I cycled to and from the Amex, it's not the greatest experience in some areas on a bike, sainsburys being a horrible area to cycle down

However, the greens have done everything in their power to bring this City to it's knees with it's anti car policy's, they recently spend 10 million on Bus passes....surely people can apply for a bus pass instead of sending them out automatically? My grandparents both have 1 and they drive....surely that would save money?

Parking charges are a joke, parking permits appear in random areas where it appears they're not needed, to pass parking permit areas, they need a majority vote, recently they pretty much approved parking permits with less than half of votes required.

The council are shocking and need removing
