B.Liar was a Tory Prime Minister in all but name.

His endeavors to line his own pockets since he left power prove that he was never a socialist.

The same as Nick Clegg could never be called a Liberal Democrat.

He might not have been a 'true socialist' in the traditional sense but then true socialists would never have got into power. Yes, he has done well from his public speaking and tours etc but perhaps you should read the following. Obviously it is from the guardian but that doesn't change the facts of what he has set up.

Figures reveal Blair's charity empire | Politics | The Observer

With regard to his British Legion donation, if he hadn't there would be a thread on here as why he had turned his back on the armed forces. Damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I haven't done any research but can someone enlighten me as to the charitable trusts set up by Thatcher and Major?

They should simply turn down the money and watch their credibility and donations soar. No need to launch an appeal for the equivalent amount.

You could well be right hon, but I don't think they're gonna be turning down such a large donation - especially knowing how it will help to improve the lives of members of the armed forces who have suffered serious injuries.

Thinking about it overnight, he couldn't really win. He is not losing much (most of the money he earns now will come from touring and speaking engagements). The advance is an advance on sales, so until that original figure has been reclaimed by the book company, there will be no additional profits. I think it looks a bit crass, but you can't say the money is not needed and it will be well used. Perhaps he should have split the donation to other charities so it did not look like "blood money" - Help the Aged and Cat Protection League perhaps?

Such touching naivete, do you really think that he majority of labour mp's/ministers arent busy lining their own pockets at every opportunty they get ?

PS so are the tories , but at least they are upfront about it !

I think TB was generally well intentioned. The war was a disaster, but there was a hangover from '92 when the first conflict was aborted and Saddam left in power.

He will forever be accused of using WMD porkies as the excuse for the war, and he certainly was at best naive and at worst duplicitous in that regard.

If someone doesn't like Labour then it is irrelevant what he does, they are never going to change their stance on the bloke.

I didn't like Tony Blair and thought he was dreadful as a PM. However, regardless of my opinion he will go down as a 'good leader' due to the length of time in post.

For me though he will always be remembered for taking the country to war based on a 'lie'.

Brown will be remembered as the PM who practically bankrupt the country.

I'll remember him as a PM who brough in the ban on fox hunting, national minimum wage, free cancer prescriptions, the Winter Fuel Allowance and the Human Rights Act... domestically I'm chuffed with the job he did, and I'll try not to focus on his one foreign Policy mistake (albeit a major one) he's human and he makes mistakes, certainly not as evil as many people seem to think.

Good on you Tony.

Agreed. Except that I believe the Iraq invasion was justified.
