Is anyone here in the business or does anyone know of anyone that is? I am currently a sales person in the finance sector and seriously considering a change.Banks are not the most pleasant places to work at the moment. I have been speaking with a Recruitment consultant today who highly recommends being one and it does sound right up my street being that there seem to be lots of transferable skills from my current role.

Wondered if anyone had any pearls of wisdom about what to expect. OTE? Working Hours Etc.

Any advice or comment would be appreciated

Thanks :albion2:

I was in the recruitment game for many years, but no longer.
Many have a poor reputation, for various reasons that I wont go into now.
You have sales experience which is essential as a large part of the job is gaining new clients. You have finance experience so go for a specialist finance agency.
Do your research, apply to an agency that has a large blue chip client list, as it probably means they have a good reputation in the industry.
Try and go for the upper end salary wise, £80,000 plus or executive headhunting they are usually professional.
The high street names are generally poor.
Avoid unskilled/semi-skilled recruitment especially temporary, and its a real bunfight, so is recruiting teachers and nurses.
This is only my opinion, many may disagree and had a bad experience at the top end, but there are some very good and professional agencies out there, ruined by many very poor agencies that most people have used.

I'm one. But I'm in the pub at the moment. Remind me in the morning, it's not difficult to get into. Big money to be made if you're motivated (I'm not) and good (I am).

How about CEO of Sussex CCC? Financial management skills is the main requirement for that job and if you like a bit of crick it could be a dream job for a bean counter.

I was one for a bit and have dealt with several.

When it came to temp work I really enjoyed it - working with students or quite often mums etc who were really glad for a bit of work, and companies who were happy with the service being provided and understanding they paid a premium for the flexibility. When it came to the permanent placements, I really didn't feel I was contributing anything to the whole scenario and felt there was a lot of pressure to be pushy. Having been in various recruitment offices as a client/punter I have overheard several phone calls where people are having to cold call or respond to ads not intended for agencies, and getting their fair share of abuse for the trouble.

My take would be that, unless you have a decent role in perhaps a niche company, it is probably incredibly stressful and based around target-setting, and dare I say commission. I'd stay away.

I worked in a media company in Brighton for a few years and once a month a couple of those highly tanned, manicured tartletts would turn up vying for our custom. They'd always bring bags of chocolate and some such shit to bribe us with. It was pathetic. I used to take the bags of treats off them and shovel them out of the door quick sharp.

And that's the thing, if you're not a tanned slimy sales twat then you can do very well out of it, because most people who do it are.

Recruitment Consultancy is a job for complete and utter f***ing mongs. The only skill you need is that to talk shit, nothing else. I have a couple of friends that are/have been in the 'industry', and although it no doubt pays well it is very boring, soul destroying at times and the hours they work are horric, 12+ hours a day. Completely different to what I do, and many others.

Although what you say is correct, its the mongs that have given the industry a poor name, but there are some good professional agencies.
When I ran an agency I cold called to make an appointment with the decision maker with no pressure, at the meeting I would present our services and promised to only call once a week, leaving some point of sale to remind him/her of the company.
I was usually given an opportunity and would send only relevant CV's.
My customers always appreciated this approach as it was so different from all the others.
The only mongs i dealt with were the ones that did not bother to turn up as promised with the most feeble of excuses, usually leading to the loss of the hard fought for client.

If you are prepared to work in London and want a solid grounding working in headhunting contact Michael Page International who are very strong in finance. Second to none in training and devlopment not ideal for a long term gig but will give you all the skills you need to move on if you want to seek better salaries and career progression. Its already been mentioned but try and stay away from the small high street recruiters as its dog fight out there in a very tough economic climate. Always happy to help a fellow Brighton supporter so inbox me if you need anymore help
ps IM currently a Director for a HH firm

The only demoralising part of recruitment is when you are calling a potential new client and it is impossible to get through because you are just another agency. Dont get me wrong, I am not bigging up recruitment because I used to do it, I know its a dirty word on here and I completely understand why, but imagine trying to run an agency properly only to be tarred with the same brush for the reasons all of you guys dislike them, only by the companies you are trying to approach.
