I read that pilots site / thread [well some of it] - apparently the flight was not allowed to be sold out, 50 seats could not be sold due to weight restrictions - so what was in the cargo? Was it something valuable? Gold is heavy [sorry speculating].

this is where conspiracy goes off the rails, there's plenty of good fertile material here without makeing things up. i read that it not uncommon in that part of the world to "tanker" fuel, carry far more than is necessary so you dont have to fill up at an airport that fuels expensive (after accounting for cost of carrying). any valuable cargo would shirley be flown by a cargo plane anyway.

im liking the theory that the captain has gone slight rogue, Sunday Mail (i know...) is reporting the pilot supports (more?) a politican who's just been convicted. astranged from his wife so potentially a suicide mission, theory goes he's done this to embaress the current government. (of course this could be the story being enginneerd to cover up the real story that it landed in Diago Garcia and the passengers moved to a high security location in the US to be interogated to find secret technologies they are working on).

Assuming that Nobody Knows Anything, pretty bloody embarrassing for global spy agencies and the aviation industry as a whole that a workaday commercial jetliner can just apparently vanish into thin air. Thought Big Brother was watching us?

All airline manufacturers need to install a tracking device that cannot be turned off, with appropriate firesafe circuitry to ensure it doesn't need to be turned off. What really worries me is that this proves that any half competent terrorist organisation could get a plane such as this, fill it with high explosives or worse and then fly it to a Capital City and create absolute havoc. I saw the statistic in the IoS today about the number of planes that disappeared since 1948 (84 total).

Scary thing is that any committed terrorist doesn't even need to go anywhere near boarding a plane or pass through any security checks at all. Just get on a FCC train anywhere from Brighton to Bedford and you can wheel 30kg of explosives into LGW South terminal. So far as I can see, there are no checks in place at all to stop that happening. Seriously needs sorting.

or a car, van or lorry. as they have done in the past, remember? why use a passenger plane not a cargo plane, or a private charter? planes are for prestige more than anything.

There are sniffer dogs at Gatwick airport that specialise in explosives.

Maybe, but you'll be extremely unlikely to encounter one between getting off a train at LGW and wheeling 30kg of 'luggage' into the South Terminal. Been to airports where you need to have a boarding card to get within 20km of the terminal, but believe me Gatwick is an atrocity waiting to happen.

Wouldn't it be just as easy to wheel the same 30kg onto the underground at rush hour and do more damage

The key for me is "WHY"? What is the motive or purpose of all this?

Terrorism works on, err, terror, so to ensure it has the terror effect, the terror organisation publicises what they have done to strike terror in to those who remain alive - terrorism is almost always backed up by a "cause" aka why we have done this awful deed. I see no evidence of this?

I read that pilots site / thread [well some of it] - apparently the flight was not allowed to be sold out, 50 seats could not be sold due to weight restrictions - so what was in the cargo? Was it something valuable? Gold is heavy [sorry speculating].

To me, there is something very underhand going on and I'm of the opinion that this aircraft landed safely somewhere. I also believe that there is more information yet to be released, particularly from military sources who's radar will track UFOs - which, with the transponders off and no radio comms, this T7 had become. This makes their flight path very sensitive, given they now think this aircraft flew on for several hours. If any UFO comes into "owned" airspace it will get a reception of at least two interceptor military aircraft - unless that country is in on it too.

This is an international incident of unprecedented proportions - I do hope they get to the bottom of it eventually.

To comeback to your main point why, let's go with terrorism and that the plane is somewhere on the ground with the 'innocent' passengers/crew in a secure area. I would imagine hi-jacking/stealing with Europe/Australia/Israel/New Zealand let alone USA/Russia/China is all most impossible ? It now has become a waiting game no doubt a target has been selected and a Boeing 777 not only can carry a full fuel load but travel great distances in excess of 11,000 miles which puts the USA within striking range.

For sure. But terrorists seem to get extra brownie points for airports for whatever reason.

Don't know if this helps but when we raise questions about security where i work a rather well know theme park near the village of Alton and these meetings are with senior management it appears its down to global iconic status ?

My niece is one of the dog handlers at Gatwick, and I know that most of the passenger areas will be checked constantly, even if you have a small residue of explosives on your skin, the dog will pick it up.
I do know where you are coming from though about wheeling a case straight off the train and into the terminal. To make anywhere 100% safe must be nigh on impossible.

For sure. But wheeling a case of explosives straight off the train is so high risk by comparison with the security prevalent in the rest of the airport that it seems IMHO to be institutionally negligent not to have safeguards in place against it happening. Smacks of the pre-9/11 laxness in the US.

"Flight MH370: last message to Malaysia sent 'after communications disabled'
Revelation suggests person who delivered 'All right, good night' message from missing plane knew system had been shut down"

"The person in control of missing Malaysian Airlines flight MH370 issued their last communication to air traffic control after the first set of aircraft communications was disabled, Malaysian authorities have confirmed, adding further weight to suspicion that the plane was hijacked."

Looks more and more like an hijacking

If it was a hijack then with no sign of debris at sea or a crash site on land it does look more and more likely the plane could have landed at some point. The best response to a hijack and hostage scenario is to have a media blackout. Easier of course if the plane lands on a military base.
No media coverage makes the hijackers position far weaker. No doubt the position will unfold over the coming days.
