I think it’s a strain or a sprain. My foot and ankle have swollen considerably so just taken two paracetamols and will ice shortly.

NHS says 8 weeks before you can run but that surely can’t be right. I’m working away from home this week and running is great for breaking up the boredom of being away. Now it will be just me the Premier Inn and limited tv channels for company.

I twisted my ankle on the Hedgehopper 5 miler last May and was out for a long time. Peroneal tendon took the stress on outside of foot, swelling under ankle and up to the knee. I eventually saw a friend of Dazzer666 but it took a few weeks after that to settle. As we all know though we must diagnose ourselves. Paracetamol will ease the pain but it isn't much of an anti inflammatory. Good luck hopefully you're just a bit swollen and enjoy Antiques Roadshow!

If no improvement in a day or two go and get it checked. Could be any number of things, and without the right diagnosis you might be doing the wrong stuff, and significantly delaying the recovery.........hope it’s nothing that’ll keep you out for long.

Cheers. Hard to know what it is as I’m not sure what caused it. I ran Friday & Saturday without any pain. I started to feel it a bit Saturday night and in hindsight running 19 miles Sunday was a shit idea.

Hopefully it’s a minor set back as my long runs have been going well and yesterday my legs felt like they would after a rest day rather than a long run, so my body (foot excepted) seems to be adapting well to the training.

Oh no mate! Sorry to hear of your setback just as you were cruising. Swelling or inflamation to the foot and ankle does sound like it might be a sprain but as dazzer says best to get it checked out if you can.

Not expecting this to be added to the 5k list because clearly it's way off, but just felt a need to share.

Started the NSC Fitness thread recently as I felt it would be useful, and have been on a real health kick last few months, starting weight of 17st 9lbs, trying to get down to 12st 8lbs by end of 2020. Have lost about 2 stone so far and last night found myself with a bit of time spare.

Have been jogging around 2-3 times a week, just a simple 2.5miler down to the beach and back. Decided to do a 5k last night, fully expecting to hit around 38-40 minutes. Completed it in 29mins 46secs. I appreciate by proper running standards that is poor, but this was a big deal for me. Will be attempting to keep chipping away at this over the months until I can join the leaderboard, will also be getting along to Littlehampton Parkrun as and when I can.

*Shameless self promotion over*, apologies.

That's a fantastic effort!

If you keep at it, you will see your times tumble down pretty quickly both as your fitness improves, but also as your weight continues to fall. It is estimated that each pound of bodyweight lost can improve running speed by 1-2 seconds per mile.

Thanks. That is a very motivating thought. I was a half decent cross-country runner at around 10-14 years old, so hopefully some of that will kick in again as the weight drops back down.

That explains your recent 29:46, which is a very respectable entry time to Parkrun. Let me know if you want to join the table, we'll all be able to watch your steady improvement.
Take it steady and it's onwards and upwards.............. and downwards regarding times and weight.

Some fine running efforts this weekend. From pissed up PB’s to Park Run 1st places, Steyning Stinger completion and HM PB’s.

I’ll bring the feel good vibe down by saying I’m injured. I’ve been very fortunate with injuries over the past 2 years but felt a niggle on my left foot Sunday. Decided to start my long run but stayed close to home throughout so I could cut short if needed.

It was painful throughout but stupidly I ran 19 miles. Today it’s painful to walk.

I don’t think it’s Plantar as the pain is purely in my left foot on the far left side.

I’m hoping with a bit of rest I’ll be ready for my 20 mile race Sunday. I’ve put in some decent mileage of late so 5/6 days off won’t be the end of the world.

Really disappointing. Without quoting all the good advice from the sages, get it looked at and get on the road to recovery. A nice period of rest won't do you any harm and you'll come back in ready to fly come marathon day.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as to call it a 'fake health crisis', more something that people don't know how to deal with, control or prevent against. I agree that there is a LOT of hysteria in the press about it but, isn't that what they always do with any sort of drama. In a week or two, it'll all be gone and it's onto the next thing (Harry and Meghan, Caroline Flack, Brexit, are recent examples of how quickly tabloid fascinations fade). In the real world, there are some sensible moves being made to try and limit the impact (and I do think there are some serious problems to come and ones that could lead to long-term lifestyle changes). One of them is to take away risk and if that means a ban on events over a certain number of people (as has happened in Switzerland, which is where I should be right now, in what is normally quite a lucrative week for me), then it's the price we have to pay. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't REALLY matter, even though yes, it is annoying. Yes, only a small number of people have been affected AT THE MOMENT. Without taking steps, who knows where it might lead? And that's the problem*- no-one really has a scooby!

It just frustrates me because it's serious for the people who get it, absolutely. And it's something we should be aware of but it's not something which warrants being on the front page of every newspaper, top story all day every day on the "news" websites and getting wall to wall coverage. It's exactly like you say, it's flavour of the month until something else happens and then it'll be forgotten about. The migrant crisis was all we could hear about for a while, that's still ongoing but the coverage has gone. The wildfires in Australia weren't covered until people started asking why, and then all of a sudden it was all we could hear about. The "news" organisations have the power to control public conversation and they're drunk at the wheel. :annoyed:

 Cracking effort, long may it continue! When I started running I wasn't able to complete a 5k without a nice walk at the Lagoon. My first timed 5k without stopping was over 30 minutes and it wasn't until I started posting in this thread that I really started to think about getting properly involved. You've taken all the first steps and I'm sure in a years time you'll be amazed at how far you've come.

Ooops, I've misled you after misreading your post. We adhere to a strict rule that only official races or Parkruns count for the table. No problem though as you just need to pop along to the LA Parkrun.:clap2:

That's a fair rule - I did wonder whether people could just make up their times and post them. I will be down to Parkrun in the next few weeks, so I guess you'll be able to see my times then?

Yes, the parkrun website lists all times for registered runners for all runs at all events (once the run director has uploaded it). You could probably find my time for my first run at Richmond back in 2009 if you chose to. :)

I could but with 30 people with your name I'm not going to bother. One of the very few Parkrun site flaws is the inability to search with name and regular Parkrun.

Free app? Have been using mapmyrun. Probably need to get a watch or fitbit type thing as just been using me phone for podcasts/music while jogging.

Yep, basic strava is free and will track your runs. A GPS watch will be more accurate but Strava on a phone is plenty to get you started

That's how I got started, I was using Strava on my phone in a pocket strapped to my arm. It was only after my 2nd marathon that I purchased a Garmin watch (Forerunner 10) which I still have, all these years later. It does everything I want it to, including the option to lap the watch periodically so I know the time/distance run when I'm doing a session run. It's perfect for me, I don't need a heart rate monitor and I certainly don't need music on it!

I did a tough session this lunch time, 5k warm up jog along the seafront and then up The Drive to Hove Park. I did the Hove Park parkrun course in 20:00 dead, and then jogged over to Preston Park and did the same there. All in all, just under 13 miles (I ran in KMs rather than miles, otherwise, I'd have rounded up!) in 1:43:02. I'm happy with the run, although the pacing around the parkrun courses was slightly off and I needed a bit of a sprint finish both times.
