Better than doing it the other way around.

Just the Brighton/London double for me. Two in eight days - what could possibly go wrong? :lol:
Done that as well. Brighton went OK, but in London I ran the first half waaaaaaay too fast,caught up with the 3.30 pacers on Narrow Street (my all time best is 3.43) then died a thousand deaths. Overall though I'd have taken 3.50 and 3.54 on consecutive weeks......just not the way it happened!

I've got my eye on 3:45 at Brighton and then sub-4 (don't really care if it's 3:59:59) in London.

If the worst comes to the worst, sub 3:57 will be fine – and a PB :)

Haha it would of been a great muddy apocalyptic photo finish... If it wasnt for the starting times, which i found a bit disconcerting as i didnt know where i was in the field of runners.

Not sure if your doing them, but im doing 3 forts and the river arun runs so plenty of opportunity to speed past me!

Yeah i saw them tucking in the breakfasts. Ive been meaning to do their torch runs ob a thurday for a while.

Not the lunatic for me..not this year..maybe next. Downslibk again near the end if the year..i think my talent lays in flat long runs!.. I love hills but in races they always do me in!

Hi All,

Thought I'd ask for a quick bit of advice from you seasoned runners! I've been running for the last 20 odd years, but only really ticking over most of the time with 3-4 milers during the week and not exactly pushing myself. I have done 3 marathons before, best time 4:04 last one 6 years ago, best 10k 40 mins and best 5k 19 mins (but that was a long time ago!).

Anyway started training late, but doing Brighton and London a week later for a charity close to my heart. Did a 19 miler on Saturday, first 15 at a steady pace of 9:20, then started to die on my ars especially the last couple into the wind which ended up being 10:20's. My goal was to try and do a sub 4 marathon, but after Saturday not sure that is doable as I know i need to do 9 min miles! My plan for the next few weeks was to do 2x fast runs during the week 10k (did 10k in 50 mins last week) and 10 miler ish then x3 long runs of 22 miles each weekend trying to get the pace up each time. Then to keep up the quick short runs and taking it easy in the last week. How do these tactics sound, any advice welcome.

Your 5/10k times are pretty impressive and would normally point to a marathon potential time of way under 4 (well under 3.30 in fact)....but I accept you're not following a full programme and they were a while ago. Difficult to be too specific with advice (and I'm not qualified anyway, so feel free to ignore) but I wouldn't bother with 3 x 22 milers, not really necessary and you'll risk injury as you haven't spent enough time building up distance. If you have 3 more long runs planned, maybe think about something like this :
-one of 20 miles, slow (9.30-10 min+ miles), simply building base endurance
-one of 18 miles, something like 5 miles slow into 10 miles at your planned marathon pace (9 min miles) and a 3 mile cool down (back to slow) -this will build a bit of speed endurance
-a third similar to the second but extending the fast bit to maybe 13 miles

Not sure where this would leave you taper-wise, but the weekend before the marathon wind right back and only do 10-12 miles at an easy pace for your long run and nothing more than a couple of easy runs (30-40 mins) in the week before the event

Re dying on your arse - firstly we all do it, secondly you may need to think about fuelling as well as training. On you last 3 long runs, make sure you take fuel (and lots of water) with you and practice with it. Typically should be looking at something like an energy gel every 45 mins or so but if that doesn't work for you (there are so many different types - some will, some won't) try the usual jelly babies and stuff.

Faster midweek runs are fine - tempo (10k) effort, or ideally one of those, one easy run and then an interval session - fast repeats of something like 800m would work well, with recoveries the same time length as the interval. Run 'em hard.

Agree with [MENTION=21215]Dazzer[/MENTION]s plan on the length of long runs. Just point out that a sub 4 hour is a 9:09 pace so you were running close to marathon pace on your Long Run at 9:20. I'm aiming for sub 3:50:00 and doing a lot of 9:30 to 10:00 mile pace.

Just done 21 miles. So slow it's not funny but as I'm going to be a rhino on the day I'm more preoccupied with finishing. Felt comfortable enough. This thing might just be possible.

Slow is under-rated. It's much more fun near the back anyway, it really is.........well done on the long'un, great feeling to get one in the bag

Paul, the magic healer, was asking about you last week. He wanted to know how you were getting on with your rehab. I'm having him pulverise my calves on Wednesday so will tell him you're on for Chicago.

When I lsaw him a few months ago I hadn't run for just under a year....I did 6 miles this morning and now have my sights on Chicago! He identified the issue quickly, gave me an extra stretch which dealt with a tendon I wasn't previously stretching with my exercises and all is now good. I don't want to discredit the previous people I'd seen, as they played a part in my overall recovery, but Paul definitely pin-pointed the final lingering issue which others couldn't identify. In short he's fantastic.

So, please convey this and my gratitude to him.

I'm not going to do Brighton this year now. My training has been interrupted by various niggles. Haven't run more than 14 miles so far and currently laid up with a stinking cold since 14th March (last run 5m). I was due to get out tomorrow morning for a long run with a mate but I'm hawking up dark green/grey stuff so f*** that.
My next marathon now is, hopefully http://www.ecomaratonadelchianti.it/website/index.php/welcome in October 2016.
