Surprised no one has mentioned the Northern as a local venue, where Meanstreak had a residency on Friday nights.

In terms of the Top Rank - U2, Stranglers, The Clash, Pretenders (supported by UB40), Squeeze, Elvis Costello, John Cooper Clarke......

Jenkinsons on a Sunday night - Toyah, Bad Manners, John Cooper Clarke....

And the best gig at the Centre around the same time - Bruce Springsteen on the River tour

Probably scores few cool points but I saw the Blues Band supported by Dumpy's Rusty Nuts at the Top Rank (or whatever it was known as that week) in the mid '80's, and the Cutting Crew at the Komedia a couple of years ago.

There was an interview with Johnny Greenwood on Radio 6 last night and he mentioned when Radiohead played at The Richmond. He complianed about how they had to carry all their equipment up the narrow stairs.

Also, my wedding after-party was one of the last events held at the Freebutt. I was really touched when this was mentioned in an article about the history of the venue.

Stretching the thread a bit, there's a book out mid-Feb on the Kent punk scene called The Kids Are All Square. Should include at least one Piranhas story...

Speaking of the Piranhas, does anybody remember the wankers that were The Anti-Piranha League? Their main gripe seemed to be that the Piranhas has 'sold out' i.e. had achieved a wee bit of commercial success. They used to hang out at the Windsor Tavern, used to always make a point of going in there with a Piranhas tesco-esque carrier bag courtesy of Attrix solely to wind them up

Ah, I remember that place; really small corner pub (as the best pubs usually are) - must have spent a lot of time and money on the Asteroids game machine in their many years ago! And they sold Roast Ox crisps (which no-one else seemed to do!).

I remember watching Brighton musicians Stuart Parkes and Winston Weatherill in the Northern on Sunday nights 1976/77. They played a mean version of Whisky in the Jar and were the remnants of the T-Bones, a band formed in the 60's http://www.allmusic.com/artist/t-bones-mn0001009593

Going further back, Jimmy's was off Old Steine at the bottom of St.James Street and hosted some great Blues bands like Savoy Brown, Chicken Shack and Free when I was really too young to have got in! http://www.mybrightonandhove.org.uk/page_id__10765_path__0p115p204p1923p.aspx

I Remember the Alhambra, and also a club called, Xtreme Saw a few grim punk rock bands there I'm sure.

Yes, the West Kent punk scene really was that crazy.
