The London Brighton and South Coast Railway started to build a line from the London - Brighton line at Lindfield to St Leonards, via Uckfield, Hailsham and Polegate. The line was to be called the Ouse Valley line, Parts of it can be seen - extra buttresses on a bridge on the London - Brighton line and an embarkement near the Uckfield bypass amongst them. It was started to block the South Eastern railway from running its own line to Brighton, as the South Eastern changed its plans, work on the new railway stopped.
