This thread reminds me of a blogger who popped up on 'geeks' advertising his latest piece.

He'd spent the morning at a Spanish early season, creditable Tour of Britain type, event.

He'd watched, from just a couple of yards away, the riders sign on.
He'd milled about the paddock.
He'd looked at the bikes.
He'd rubbed shoulders with top professionals.
He'd not spent a single euro.
He'd come away unhappy.

We pointed out no other sport offered him that much access, FREE.
The fact if he so wished in the afternoon he could replicate the event on his own bike, on the same course, again for FREE.
He could buy the entire kit as used by those pro's for a few thousand pounds.
Or he could buy decent lower specced products from the same manufacturers for much less.

He did seem to admit perhaps he'd been a little close-minded about this morning out.

Drug testing in football is particularly lax especially on the continent. It is usually just urine testing rather than blood testing as well. I think it's safe to assume many top level footballers are doped. They might not even realise but get fed treatments by their Clubs.

If only it were 'johnny foreigner'

I have documented this (when BoF made me aware of it) :-
http://www.thefa.com/GetIntoFootball/Health Specialists and Medics/TestingProgrammes.aspx
to a cycling journo over the last 8 months, it has never changed.

I really wish I hadn't bothered now.
I'm wondering if I continue past a year.

Ok then minimal testing.

Footballers are rarely tested.
Most are not even tested once a season.

At this years Giro d'italia the full Movistar team was randomly tested one morning.
Then randomly tested again in the afternoon.
That is 18 blood and urine tests on one team in one day.
The FA don't carry that many out in a month, and if they did they would only be urine tests, which even I could manipulate.
By the way, all clean.

Why not rent out your house if you're going away? My mate is on the route and has rented out her flat for £500 for the weekend (more than her monthly rent).

Thinking of renting out my flat for Brighton Pride, now I've discovered they're sealing off the streets for the weekend and banning residents from drinking in any of our local pubs and bars, from buying alcohol in any local shops or supermarkets, or bringing anything glass (eg any shopping with bottles or jars in) home from elsewhere. WTF?

Hm where did you read this as it sounds like nonsense made up to suit an agenda.

Absolutely. Having previously witnessed the World road Championships and the TdF in Sussex, the Olympics in Surrey, various bits of the ToB and now the TdF again this time in East Anglia it is a really precious opportunity to see world class athletes at such close quarters - and for free!

I still get a buzz seeing the now rather faded 'Go Wiggo' signs painted on the road about half a mile from my gaff, left over from the ToB a couple of years ago, and before he was a TdF winner and Olympic champ. Seeing the peloton including riders like Wiggo and Cav together with the whole Tour entourage rattling through my local roads where I routinely cycle was superb.

I'll be watching Stage 3.

It's all in a letter from Brighton Pride pushed through my door a few days ago. It's all legit.

Could you post a copy on this page. I cannot see how this event can force local traders to stop their daily business for a whole weekend, and it's not happened before.

Need to see that.

No-one's stopping their business, just restricting it. You have to pay £5 for a wristband. You can only buy booze (be it from pubs, supermarkets or shops) with a wristband. All glass is banned also, so the supermarkets presumably won't be able to sell anything (eg pickles) that's in a glass container.

Residents get a free wristband (included with the letter) which initially sounds fair enough until you see it says "Access Only - No Alcohol Sales" on it. Basically the wristband allows me into the sealed off area THAT I LIVE IN - but I'm not allowed to buy booze in the area, or bring booze into the area, or bring anything glass into the area, ie I can't take home a jar of pickled onions all weekend, for example. And if I want to drink in any of my local pubs - one of which I work for - or even just buy a can of Guinness from Morrisons, I have to buy a £5 wristband to do so.

It's not a secret. Surprised there hasn't been more fuss about it. Maybe I'm the only one who read the letter?

You can buy goods as normal up until 4pm on the Saturday, and then until 2pm on the Sunday. So it's not a total restriction- just a pain if you need to purchase certain items outside that time.

That said, I appreciate you're frustration, but as long as I had time to be prepared I wouldn't be that bothered by it. If my total movement was restricted I would be concerned.

That said, you have a free pass to the party. I'll have to pay £5 if I want to pop down on the Sunday to catch up with some friends, which I often have.

Enjoy.

It would appear this is the thread for people who hate the idea of free international events, literally on their doorsteps.

He might be an ignorant tosser in your opinion but for the record, in mine you're an arrogant tosser.

Now get on your bike and go and piss off more motorists who actually pay for the roads.......

Am I allowed to drive on the roads in my Nissan Leaf?

The party should never have been allowed to be staged there. As it has clearly been outgrowing the area it should have been moved down to Madeira Drive. They are even closing Marine Parade (A259) which will make Edward Street absolutely clogged with traffic and that has Roadwork restrictions due to a complete rebuild.

Jeez ... your holiday means you'll miss a superb event. When the Tour came to Brighton, it delivered the best street party I've ever had the pleasure to attend.

I have witnessed the tour come through my home town twice now and I just want you to know that I thought the Charles/Diana wedding street party peed all over them. :)

Pity you feel that way, not many get the opportunity of a free premier world sporting event passing by their front door, let alone actively avoid it, especially anyone interested in sport.

Embrace and enjoy it, ok you might only see the riders for a few seconds but the event is mega. Chill out, have a BBQ and a few beers and watch it go by from the comfort of your own home.

Premier world sporting event? Riding a bike!? Lol

Believe me, you would have far more to complain about if The Naked Bike Ride had gone past your house. 70-30 bias of men, most 50 years old + with beer bellies and grey hair revelling in the chance to get their sad little willies out without being arrested. Some even chose to cycle standing on the pedals they were so proud of their little wieners.
