Meh. It's not really Spurs' fault that Southampton got into a financial mess, so much so that they had to waive their sell on clause for a pittance.

Absolutely. Spurs have done absolutely nothing wrong. They could even maintain that they were doing Saints a big favour, letting them realise that potential money into some hard cash when they really needed it.

I doubt any Saints fans cried for us, when we did EXACTLY the same thing, regards Gareth Barry's sell-on clause, at Villa.

What percentage was the clause?

The Barry one? Sorry, I can't remember the details at all. Maybe 15%. We sold the clause for half a million I THINK - significantly less than we would have got when he eventually moved to Man City.

Its quite a difficult call though - Barry at Villa looked very much the one-club man. He may have never moved and we'd have seen nothing. this happened to us way back when we sold John Robinson to Charlton, for a modest fee with a big sell-on clause. Did they ever sell the bugger? Did they hell.

Yep, well remembered. Full details in this Argus report of the time (the final payment we accepted was in relation to Barry AND Michael Standing). Interestingly, it seems Barry and Standing were (or became) best friends, and Barry subsequently appointed Standing as his agent, despite him having no previous legal experience.

The only question mark I'd have about Bale going to Madrid is that he was at his best having the team built around him at Spurs last season and playing that free, unconventional forward's role. With the best will in the world, it is difficult to see him having that kind of freedom at Madrid all the while Cristiano Ronaldo is there, so he could quite possibly get pushed back out onto the flank.

This is spot on.
