....and what about Sam Brown. Apart from her own carer, the amount of backing vocals she has done to boot. Now believed to be retired due to a cancer scare.

At the exact time of typing the Staples Singers are in the I machine!

It's possibly true that there are few modern female singers with decent voices. Most of them put on a nasal twang and a lot of whining to try and sound soulful. But it just sounds awful. I thought Whitney Houston had a voice like a foghorn. Madonna's voice is weak, but she's a trained dancer with singing as a very successful sideline. Emeli Sandé is tone-deaf.

But, with great voices from X-Factor and BGT, I offer:
Susan Boyle
Alexandra Burke
Stacy Solomon

Otherwise, past queens of song include:
Barbra Streisand
Bette Midler
Aretha Franklin
Ella Fitzgerald
Dusty Springfield
Esther Ofarim
Julie Andrews
Karen Carpenter
Chrissie Hynde
Shirley Bassey
Maria Callas
Peggy Lee

Kate Bush & Tracy Chapman - although would you count Fleetwood Mac in there as well? - all a long time ago.

Balls, Was just about to come on here and suggest Tracy Chapman has an amazing voice.

I've worked in a fair few musical productions and there are some fantastic singers that will give even the most stubborn people goosebumps. They'll never make a record as their style doesn't suit cheesy slutty pop music.
