Thank you. I've never tried doing 100kms of Sussex roads. My normal MTB and road rides are about 15-20 miles with about 1000 feet of climbing, which ive been doing for about 34 years (I'm 63). I'll go out later this week for a spin and see how I do.

I'm only intending to go up and down MV and to / from my mates (although they said they'd pick me up from the bottom).
100% do the Sault route. You'll get all the enjoyment and be able to say you've done it.

Dear all include @Pogue Mahone .... which bike repair places in Brighton & Hove do you recommend just now?

A nsc recommendation years ago, I've used Rayment Bikes ever since. But they're incredibly busy, "We can fit that in in 6 weeks time" the usual incredibly laid back response.

Any others, who don't have those wait times, please?

Rayments had a very stable staff for well over a decade, but in the last two years three of their best employees have moved on - couldn’t afford to live in Brighton anymore.

I haven’t tried anyone else yet, but I might, based on any recommendations that appear here!

Sorry, @Weststander, I am not able to help!

Cheers anyway. I really liked one of the characters who disappeared.

The business/people had a unique attitude to the pandemic. They closed from March to Summer 2020, the same bloke told me because they didn’t want to put their wives/kids at risk of death!

Yes, it's sad what's happened to the 'old' Rayments crew - although I got my very first MTB from the old old Lewes Rayments shop - closed for years now. A Rockhopper with the rear brake mounted on the chain stays.

Anyway, I recently got a tip top service fron Baker St Bikes. It was about a 3 week wait. I also continue to hear good things about mobile mechanic Rule 5 who used to be at Fiveways (where I bought my current MTB) - also closed for years.

My Baker St Bikes 'Good as new' service including new cassette, chainrings, chain, cables blah blah & cost £180. Probably a record for me, but it hadn't been professionally serviced since about 2019. And it is as good as new - a couple of my cycling mates asked if it was new!

Rayment have done well out of me over the last 6 years or so. On my own bikes and my son’s not looked after Specialised MTB, countless bills of £125 to £175 a shot. My Boardman hybrid seemed to have doomed chainsets over a decade, costing fortunes, in the end I gave up the ghost buying a Trek hybrid 1x11 so won’t have issue again!

I’ve moved up to Hurst and have used the cycling cafe Proper in Hassocks. They have a workshop there. All good.

However, my son has just used Porteur in Hove and had an excellent experience. Prompt and bike back as new.

There was also a chap called Bike Monkey in Brighton. Offered a mobile service. He was great.

Hmmmm....coincidence that the weather in that early part of 2020 was scorching & absolutely glorious?

They were all out on their MTBs riding the Downs!!! 😜

Leaving us with unrepaired bikes :lolol: .

That was amazing cycling weather ..... April and May 2020, every day seemed to be 20c, windless and sunny.

I wish!

I once took an old Peugeot apart with the idea of cleaning up all the parts and putting it back together. When it came to it nothing appeared to fit anywhere at all. I just had a pile of gleaming parts on my garage floor for over a year.

Is there a helmet camera that anyone can recommend? I'm considering starting a video blog for anyone who cares enough to watch me pedalling around London occasionally.

Review sites say the best two are the Insta360 or the GoPro Hero 11. They cost upwards of 500 quid though (excl. accessories). Does anyone here use a sleek, rainproof model with decent resolution and battery life...one that I don't need to ask my bank for a medium sized loan to pay for. Thank you for any advice.

Please can I have some further bike advice.

Five years ago nsc’ers recommended the Specialized Pitch hard tail MTB, duly bought from Rayment at £600, turned out to be a great buy for my son. Sadly it’s come to end of its economic life, South Coast Bikes are quoting £380 for a long list of vital repairs, not even touching the seized up front suspension.

Any ideas for a hard tail replacement please?

He cycles a lot of miles, in Brighton, on the under-cliff to Saltdean, on the Downs a little. Prone to punctures.

Nothing flash or expensive, he parks it Brighton in the open sometimes overnight , albeit with brilliant locks. Just another hard tail for a few years slog. Not a cheapo, in haste we bought a cheapo from Halfords last week, it was crap and returned the next day.

The Vitus gets consistently good reviews:

Thanks as ever.
