Goal hero backs Hawks to go all the way to final

Goal hero Ryan McBride believes Whitehawk can go all the way to the FA Vase final after booking their place in the last eight with an historic 2-1 win over Quorn.

McBride's 52nd-minute goal breathed life into the Hawks after they had been comprehensively outplayed in the first half by the Leicestershire-based side at a packed East Brighton Park.

The striker's 23rd goal of the season cancelled out Paul White's opener in the 22nd minute and the 376 fans crammed inside the tiny covered terrace went wild when Toby Phillips scrambled home what turned out to be the winner just after the hour.

McBride has now scored in every round of the competition and hopes to keep that record going all the way to the final.

He said: "That was biggest game I have ever played in so I am over the moon we won and it means that now there is a bigger one to come.

"We struggled in the first half but I thought we were a different team in the second half. I couldn't be happier and there is no reason why we can't keep going to the final and win it."

Talk of reaching the final seemed like fantasy after a first half where Whitehawk struggled to find any rhythm on a mudbath pitch which deteriorated fast in the pouring rain.

Hawks boss Ian Chapman tore the paint off the walls in the changing rooms during the interval and got exactly the reaction he wanted from his players as they roared back to pocket £2,000 in prize money and clinch their place in today's sixth round draw.

Chapman said: "We were so bad in the first half and there were some harsh words at half-time because we all knew we could do better.

"The players picked themselves up for the second half and I thought we totally dominated after that. We showed a lot of character and deserved our victory.

"To get to the quarter finals is a massive achievement for this club. When I first came here three years ago I wouldn't ever have dreamed we could do this well in such a prestigious competition.

"But that is not the end of it. We have shown that on our day we are not a bad side at this standard and with a bit of luck who knows how much further we can go."

While McBride and Phillips grabbed the headlines it was goalkeeper Ross Standen who did as much as anyone to secure a famous victory.

He could do nothing to stop the opening goal as Quorn broke the entire length of the pitch from a poorly delivered Whitehawk corner and White finished from close range.

The same player thought he had made it 2-0 soon after when he found himself with just Standen to beat from eight yards but the keeper somehow got down to push his low drive to safety.

Whitehawk's only sight of goal in the entire first half came just before the break when Tommy Pattenden's shot was blocked by the legs of goalkeeper Daniel Hamstead but it was a different story after the restart.

All of a sudden the home team hit their stride and they were level within seven minutes when McBride's header from Gareth Green's cross just crept over the line at the far post.

Standen pulled off another important stop to preserve that lead almost straight from the restart when Jermaine Gordon burst clear of the defence and the crowd erupted soon after when Phillips scrambled home the winner.

Again it came from a deep cross to the far post and although Phillips' initial header was blocked by Hamstead he reacted quickest to stab home the loose ball amid a tangle of bodies.
