The late Mel Hopkins used to say this as well. He would get beaten by the winger but he was athletic enough to intercept the ball first on lots of occasions, playing against Stanley Matthews, Garrincha etc. He also said that hardest winger to stop was the one with sheer speed.
I can see this all going wrong if the Albion attempt to do this. More likely the Albion left back (whoever plays) is tempted into a rash interception.
It works conversely even more importantly when out midfielders get their telegraphed passes intercepted. I think Dicker is a shade too predictable. I put it down to being so right-footed, but maybe not?
It would need a Modric to pass accurately at that distance and you would not want to do it anyway! Only switch long ball across the pitch if there is no one to intercept and the player is in acres of space.
