Well, completely agree with the article, the problem isn’t red or white ball cricket, it is an organisational / institutional one. Taking free-to-air cricket away was always going to take a generation to realise we’re slowly losing a base of potential players. India, Nz, Aus cricketers aren’t coming from the marbeled halls of public schools, they’re coming from the streets or farms of gritty cricketers prepared to fight for every inch. England are still very much a side that looks like they all could be waiting for Mummy to pick them up in the Range Rover after the game…

Agreed. If your talent pool is generally limited to private schools (with some very honorable exceptions), then you're stuffed before you start.

Apparently according to a former parent, Sussex actively encourage their talent pool at Under 11 level to attend a number of Public Schools within the county as the level of coaching and facilities are far superior to any private or state school locally.

Obviously unless a sports scholarship is forthcoming, something Mason Crane did when he left Thomas A Beckett Middle for Lancing College, that would require extensive funds, and you’ve got the primary reason why the selection pool is smaller than the Aussies.

Just out of interest of the 11 who failed at the MCG, how many didn’t attend public school?

When I was at the Sydney test in 2007, and we had just lost 5-0, Boycott and Aggers were on the outfield near me and about to go live with a wrap up of the day. I shouted out ‘they could have done with you out there today Geoffrey’ and without hesitation he shouted back ‘they could have done with me at both ends’. Then Aggers joined in ‘oh no, not you batting at both ends Geoffrey, we’re trying to encourage people to watch, not put them off for life!’. It was really funny, and then, still guffawing, they went live with their broadcast. Probably the highlight of that tour, along with Collingwood’s 205 at Adelaide!

I'd have given him an MBE for that.

Oh....

Ben Stokes, James Anderson and Mark Wood. Not sure about Bairstow.

There is an assumption that Aussies aren't privately educated, but it still runs at about 40%.

The highest numbers are for South Africa and India out of the 'big four'.

Chris Silverwood to isolate for 10 days and " miss " the Fourth Test.... 2 things, a, will this improve the England team performance ? and b, its rather handy for dodging those awkward questions when we get tanked.again....

England men's head coach Chris Silverwood will miss the fourth Ashes Test in Sydney after being forced to isolate for 10 days.

He must isolate after a family member as part of England's touring party in Australia tested positive for Covid-19.

The fourth Ashes Test starts in Sydney on Wednesday, 5 January 2022.

England have recorded seven positive cases - three support staff and four family members - since a PCR testing regime began on Monday 27 December.

Silverwood and his family will have to isolate in Melbourne where England suffered their latest defeat as they went 3-0 down on the way to losing the Ashes.

England will have a fourth round of PCR tests on Thursday before they, along with Australia, are scheduled to fly to Sydney on a chartered flight the following morning.

Additionally, the England squad will be tested on the whereabouts off their off stump.

Start delayed due to rain….forecast isn’t brilliant over the next few days…we might scrape a draw if four days get washed out.

Bangladesh on the verge of an ‘away’ win against NZ

Watched a bit of this here and there - damn sight more competitive than our matches. Some superb bowling from Bangladesh and pretty dire Test batting from NZ. But very competitive all the same.

Aussies win the toss and BAT.

It's difficult having not seen the wicket live - us cricketers like to be at one with the wicket by touching it - but there is a significant covering of grass and watching the bowlers on similar pitches next to the square, the ball is zipping through. With the atmosphere around, bowl first is the logical option.

Aussies win the toss and BAT.

Crucial first couple of hours then. Broad and Anderson on a green tinge with a bit of cloud around.

I would have played Robinson over Wood. Such is life.

Day 1 not over yet but already looking like only the weather can save us from another hammering.
Had we won the toss can anyone imagine England 111 for 1?

Is this England's first 100 partnership of the series?
