Yes, " Lucky to have a Job " marvellous Old Chestnut and just in time for Christmas !..........I'm optimistic about getting a pay rise possibly next week, it will be my first rise since Jan 2015, maybe I should not accept the 1-1.5 % I might get after all, I'm lucky to have a job, any job and hell I am lording it on £8.20 an hour.

Train guards/drivers luggage handlers.....It may be the season of goodwill to all...but I`m struggling with these people who are fu..ing up commuters and now holiday makers. They haven`t had a pay rise since 2014 FFS, what have they done to deserve a pay rise or is it some god given right. I like you feel lucky to have a job !!!!!

Personally I like to know all the facts before making judgement...clearly you feel strongly as it seems others do..but I won't be joining that particular bandwagon ..I'll watch with interest ....hopefully it can all be sorted before the dates mentioned

Common sense suggests that if you've made other efforts to resolve a dispute and this really is the 'last resort' then you'd highlight those other efforts ..... it would keep the public on side surely ? Problem is that unions are somewhat dinosaur like and have very little brains.

Agreed, people could maybe have sympathy if they had gone to the press months ago and said something along the lines of " look we want to negotiate better conditions or wages whatever and give you two months to sit round the table with us and if nothing can be agreed we WILL be taking action as a LAST resort and these are the days we plan"

Now I see nothing wrong with that, instead it seems they are holding the company to ransom and again the public are the collateral damage and essential no public travelling no income to the companies involved no job. It seems the public are fair game at the moment and the unions are reverting to bully boy tactics from the 70s and 80s.

Unfortunately I'm fully expecting the teachers to start striking soon, that will really feck us all up.

Are you sugesting that union leaders do not have to be "Degree qualified" like plod will have to be very soon.

At the moment i am on the same rate as i was in 2005, i nearly choked on my tea at the poster complaining they had not had a rise since Jan 2015.

He hasn't said don't take a pay rise that's offered has he ? I'm in [MENTION=22389]bashlsdir[/MENTION] 's boat on this one. In the last 3 years I've been made redundant twice, been out of work for a total of 10 months and taken a 35% pay cut. Have I tried to f**k over my customers in an attempt to blackmail my employers ? No ! I've gone on to get other jobs and worked hard. Where necessary I've used a lawyer to screw my (now ex) employer. No customer suffered.

There is no way on planet earth that every one of these strikes is 'last resort' yet it's the standard line trotted out by the unions.

So it seems we are pretty much in the same boat ? I have been made redundant twice and told that my services as a self employed locum were not going to be needed due to a change in company policy, I have worked pretty much all my life apart from a couple of weeks in 1978. Currently I am earning approx. 25% less than I was 12 years ago and it was only £21 K then. It seems that many of us are working harder and harder to stand still or go backwards, no £995 leather trousers for me......

I am almost envious of those who are still in a union and reluctantly standing up for their rights, too many of us don't have a voice.

I was wondering when people would start mentioning their last pay rises. I can't even remember my last one but it was definitely almost a decade ago (global financial meltdown time). I've moved jobs since but on the same money. Not complaining because I'm paid quite well but so many people I know are in the same boat - no pay rise in 5-20 years, so much worse off than ten years ago. I sympathise that the employers are coining it - aren't they always, but I really don't think striking is the solution! It clearly isn't very effective. :(

Yet another Union piles in to extend their workers Christmas break, why do they think going back to the 70's wins them any sympathy from the hard working people who are suffering daily threats from these dinosaurs. Get real this is the 21st century with great opportunities for all who are prepared to look forward and move with the times.
The government will have to get involved to deal with these hostage takers. I hope they are given the support to do what is necessary in order that we return back to normality.

Mick Cash of the RMT earns something in the region of £130k ( !!!??!!! ) whilst his members earn in the region of £30k ..... it's hard to work out what he does to earn over FOUR times his members ..... good old socialism eh ?

This is a generic argument and not based on this exact case. Most unions are the employees themselves and they are simply managed under an umbrella of Unite or RMT. The disputes are between the company and its own workforce. When both sides fail to agree, that's when the larger Union umbrella steps in. So all these disputes are started by a problem between the employees and the company bosses, the employees own union representatives are often in charge of dates of strike etc, but the big press stuff is done by the parent union. So to you it looks like Red Len or whoever is instigating this, when in actual fact it's the employees. They need the help and financial clout of the parent union.
There is an increasing trend for big bosses and big businesses to push wages lower and lower whiles profits get higher and bosses pay themselves more. Workers are talking about a 2or3% payrise and bosses are upping their pay by 10times that amount. It's no coincidence that all these strikes are coming to a head now, probably a coordinated effort for maximum impact, I for one agree it's the right thing to do. Everyone always asks what the union has done to resolve matters but its the company that has a duty to pay its staff fairly and allow staff to share in the success of a company. Bosses in this country are greedy and just aren't doing it. Their opinion is that if you don't like it, leave. This small society 'f*ck 'em' attitude is pushing us toward one of the most unequal disparities of wealth in the world.

It's from midnight 23rd so it's actually 24th & 25th. Merry Christmas every one. I know this because I have 3 friends flying out on holiday on the 25th. Or at least they were.

I have moved jobs 3 times in 7 years to get a pay rise. If I hadn't moved I wouldn't have earned more. That is my choice. If I had stayed, would I go on strike for more money? No I would leave if I don't like it.

Time to ban these union strikes who hold the public to ransom..

Ban them you say? So that wages can be pushed down even further?

My wife and I have had a horrific and stressful year with custody issues of my children and as some light relief have booked to take her away just after Xmas and celebrate NYE abroad, if this trip is disrupted I will hold BA and the unions in contempt, both of them are scum!
