Do you have a copy of Michael Wolfe’s Fire and Fury? There’s a great description in there of how when Trump moved into the WH in 2016, he had locks installed on his bedroom door, 3 TVs installed in the room and after 6pm would retire for the evening and spend time watching TV and eating cheeseburgers. Conversely, according to a report quoted by a BBC article in 2018, ”Mr Obama had "night owl" habits and was known sometimes to stay up until 01:00am or 02:00am working after his family was asleep …Other presidents, like both Lyndon B Johnson and Bill Clinton, were known to make calls in the middle of the night.”

There are also accounts in Fire and Fury of how he refused to let WH staff clean up his room or pick piles of clothes up off the floor.

“According to the (Axios) report” the BBC article continued; “the president has designated "Executive Time" from 8:00am to 11:00am in the Oval Office, but actually spends these hours in his residence watching television, making phone calls and tweeting”. Trump built “unscheduled "Executive Time" during the work day“ into his diary which was “spent in the dining room next to the Oval Office where the president watches cable news…In one example Axios presented, the president's schedule began at 11:00 with "Policy Time", then "Executive Time" at 12:00, an hour for lunch, followed by more "Executive Time" from 13:30”

Trump also promised in August 2016; "I'm going to be working for you. I'm not going to have time to go play golf." He had wracked up at that point 298 visits to golf clubs at a cost to the taxpayer of $144,000,000. He played 19 rounds of golf in work hours just in his first 100 days in Office cf Obama once, Biden once.

The Report concluded that: “The main difference …,is that Mr Trump's reported schedule could be detrimental to his ability to govern effectively.”

Mrs Margaret Thatcher was known to have 4 hours asleep a night - getting up at 5am to start work then spending the evening cooking/looking after her family.

As World leaders go, Trump is a veritable burger-eating couch potato, spends a lot if time playing golf, watching reports about himself on cable news and a slob by all accounts 🤷‍♂️

Imagine the bloodbath if he had worked 8 hours days during his presidency. A saving grace really.

OK well one of you must be wrong.

@lasvegan what evidence do you have the Trump is a workaholic (in the context of running the country, not running his business and personal PR, which is clearly a preoccupation)?

I suspect my opinion is probably a majority one here so I don’t think it’s a case of one person being right or wrong on NSC - the discussion is broader than that - the evidence is all there how Trump spent his evenings, how much he played golf and spent watching cables news while working - it was widely reported by WH staff at the time how Trump spent his Presidential time.

Perhaps you are also forgetting he ran the Country on Twitter 😂

I think my point was that if he is a workaholic, he's working on seizing an advantage, any advantage for himself. He's not working hard on behalf of the American public. So I was agreeing with you.

I am hoping that @lasvegan can justify his 'workaholic' assessment of Trump. And without simply stating that Joe Biden is normally finishing his Ovaltine and putting on his wee willy winky bedtime hat by 7 PM. ???

As it happens I distrust people who 'work' work into the wee hours. Being Pres is mostly about having vision, a plan, and good people. They don#t have to 'do' much heavy lifting themselves. They are also a figurehead. They should not be working out economic growth predictions when the football is on telly.

For me it isn't about how many hours Trump works, it is about how much of a **** he is.

I accept that @lasvegan thinks on balance Trump us better than Biden, but I don't think there is any need to make up a trope about him being a workaholic as justification. Being better than Biden is enough, surely? On balance I think Biden is better than Trump, but it is only my opinion.

I don’t have any evidence other than what I’ve read and what he has achieved. I guess it all depends on what source you deem more reliable, the “rabid right” or the “looney left”.

I prefer the dull middle. Not read anything about his putting in the extra mile there. Although maybe you think the BBC, for example, is loony left. I certainly hop not!

Between yours and Zeberdi's sources, there isn't much competiton really as you haven't provided any. Not really to do with rabid right or looney left more, some have been provided and some haven't.

So what we have to choose between are substantiated and unsubstantiated claims.

Didn’t one of them happening while he was running a casino?

Imagine how successful a businessman you have to be to go bankrupt running a casino.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders responded to the Axios report with a statement defending the president's work ethic:

"The time in the morning is a mix of residence time and Oval Office time, but he always has calls with staff, Hill members, cabinet members and foreign leaders during this time. The President is one of the hardest workers I've ever seen and puts in long hours and long days nearly every day of the week all year long. It has been noted by reporters many times that they wish he would slow down because they sometimes have trouble keeping up with him."

Here you go, quoted from the BBC article so it may even be true. Sarah Sanders is a far more reliable source than left wing Axios, the source BBC used for its hit piece.

P.S. Some of my best bits of business have been negotiated on the golf course…😉

This would be the Sarah Saunders who swore publicly, absolute loyalty to Trump yet stood down as his PS, lied to the Mueller Report investigators to protect her boss’s decision to fire Comey, reduced media scrutiny by the WH Press Corps down to periodic appearances by DT at the podium on the White House lawns deciding what to answer or not. The same Sarah Saunders who claimed ‘God wanted Trump to be President’, made false claims about how many people Trump’s border wall had stopped and manipulated the firing of a respected journalist from the Press Corps for asking difficult questions.

Surely @lasvegan you can do better than that Sarah Saunders? 🙂

What has he achieved? He inherited hundreds of millions, and then committed crime after crime to try and get what he can.

Or Democrats will feel poorer and less free because they now realize Biden’s border policy is a national disaster, and will therefore vote for Trump. A really good opinion pice by Victor Davis Hanson.

And another opinion

I live in South Texas. I have watched our border for years. The one thing that really pisses me off is when some MAGA cult member who has been drinking from the right-wing propaganda hose for years tries to tell me what I have experienced, what I have lived. Here’s the reality… Under Obama/Biden the border was its most peaceful in 20+ years. When Trump took office everything blew up, caravans, disgusting detention centers in shopping centers, horrific child separations. A paper quagmire that the Biden administration is still sorting out. Nobody working for Trump was serious or had a plan. They just escalated cruelty and didn’t do any of the paperwork. Like everything Trump did it was inept, incompetent, more harm than good. Trump’s entire administration was a series of incompetent missteps. Covid, body bags, billions in misplaced or stolen stimulus, 8 Trillion added to the deficit, stock market crash, rising inflation, security breaches, loss of classified documents, fake electors scheme, the ridiculous, violent, seditious insurrection at the capitol. All of the above while his corpulent ass golfed over 365 days out of four years. Don’t come on my timeline trying to impose your artificial reality that Obama (Black man bad!!!) caused the border crisis and the fantasy that the border was secure under Trump. There’s a difference between what Trump says and what he does. He has always been all talk and no action. Right wingers today are manipulating the gullible, using footage that was taken months ago and screaming “invasion!”. It’s important to remember that Republicans want it to be crazy, they need it to be crazy. That’s why they blocked the most significant border reform legislation in decades. They can’t complain about Joe Biden if we fix the problem. I for one am tired of our border culture being used as a political piñata by hacks that don’t understand it. The border can not be closed. If it is closed it has a negative impact on US GDP of $2 Billion a day. Families live on both sides of the border. People cross the border everyday, each way, to go to work, school, volunteer. Right wing ignorance supposes that the Mexico side of the border is a no-man’s land. It’s not, our border cities are half in the US and half in Mexico, divided only by a checkpoint. They are communities. Unfamiliar to some, but a way of life for us. Non-nuanced black and white thinking is why Republicans keep losing elections. Ignorance about the border, ignorance about women’s health, ignorance about the fascist threat that they are so hellbent on putting back in the White House so he can do more damage to our economy, security and standing in the world. Do me a favor. Understand that reality is nothing like the Russia-fueled disinformation that is constantly spewed by Fox, Newsmax, OAN and all of the fear monger podcasts. It’s all nonsense. Life here isn’t perfect but it isn’t a post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie either. Life in South Texas is peaceful and pleasant and nothing like the hellhole depicted on Right-Wing Propaganda outlets. Neither is the rest of America. Don’t be like this guy below, a “Christian” that has the nerve to call me a liar, when his entire worldview is built on a steady diet of lies and fear from the media puppet masters that control him. If you want to comment on the border, come see it with your own eyes. When the drunken MAGA “take back our border” people came down here they couldn’t find any migrants to threaten. So after making a mess in our yards and our streets, they left. And we cleaned up after them. Migrants aren’t as messy. If you want to make a difference, call your Congressperson and tell them to support the bipartisan border security legislation. Get these National Guard members back to duty and out of our streets, hotels and coffee shops… end the congestion caused by Greg Abbott’s desperate audition for VP. Quit spreading the Republican lie that the border is in crisis.
