the British Army chief wants a larger budget to recruit and train a larger standing army.

he absolutly does not want an untrained, enthusiastic conscripted mob.
Not just an untrained mob, an untrained mob that gets replaced by another one as soon as you’ve trained them. It must quickly become a conveyor belt of mediocrity.

Was listening to a vox-pop thing on the radio.

“Would you fight in a war against Russia”

“I’d love to but I have a dodgy knee”

That about sums Britain up for me at the moment.

Britain; I’d love to but I’ve got a dodgy knee.

Putin has just made a decree that all former parts of Russia and the USSR, and anywhere where Russian is spoken, should become part of Russia. This includes Alaska, and large parts of Europe and Asia, including all the 'stans'. We may think this is insane, but experience tells us that he - actually - means it.

Eh? Putin wants to claim, among everywhere else, Alaska? Good luck with that Vlad

I think you miss the point.
There is a demand for more money to be put in the hands of the armed forces, there is only so much to go around.
The government can create as much money as it likes as long as it doesnt cause inflation. The real issue is whether there are enough resources available. Its usually the resource contstraints that cause inflation.

I will let heroes like you to deal with it 🙂
I look at my 16 year old non-blood nephew in the Ukrainian armed forces training setup. 2 years away from combat. Training to hunt Russians in Ukraine. Brave, proud of his uniform, courageous, a good heart.

A lesson to me. He'll be long gone if the war reaches Britain, and prepare now we must.

He is right. We must be ready to fight Russia.

Luckily the massive destruction of Putin's current army in Ukraine has bought us time - a few extra years. But unless Putin is utterly defeated in Ukraine - along with his mob in Moscow - then war is coming to us. In our lifetimes or for the future generations.
Calm down Captain Mannering …

The next major conflict won’t be a conventional war like WW1 or WW2 - it will be (already is ) high tech warfare conducted from thousands of miles away - remote ‘engagement’ with the enemy where AI is the most ‘valuable’ tool in the box. The US/UK are very adverse to large scale boots on the ground after years of questionable exit strategies and legalities of two costly Gulf Wars - for the US that is in addition to the horrors of Vietnam which has never completely been reconciled in the collective conscience as a ‘just’ war. That for the Allies is the abhorrent ‘benefit’ in them fighting proxy wars when it is not territory you are after but political influence - crudely speaking, where there are enough nationals who are directly under threat from invasion or genocide, one doesn’t need to commit large scale numbers of one’s own troops to the field of combat.

A Russian invasion of the UK will not happen. Being a NATO country, the other members including the USA are bound by agreement to come to our aid by military means.
We have all seen that Russia has it's hands full in the stalemate in Ukraine at the moment.
In such a scenario, there would be more chance of a nuclear button being used than a full scale battle of Britain conflict between Russia and NATO. People dismiss this but it only takes one crazy person to do that, and Putin is doing a good impression of such a person.

Don't count on the USA if Trump gets in. His madness, compared to a box of frogs, is on a par with Putin's.

While I agree Putin is madder than Mad Mick McMad drunk on a rollercoaster, it takes a few levels of people for a nuclear strike to occur.

And as far as I’m aware we are still making the daily call to Russia

“Not thinking of pressing the button, are you”?

“No. You”?

“Nope”

“Good good, same time tomorrow”

Which is actually a call that takes place every day. Weirdly.

I am calm. And at peace with the future.

I also have no fear about fighting Russian invaders if that is the hand I am dealt.

Fortunately modern warfare favours the dug in defenders. We see this in Ukraine. Moscow will be ground into the dust far to the east of the UK but the cost will be horrific.
