Nice guy, tries hard, lots of excuses are therefore made for him but ultimately he doesn’t do enough in the chances he’s given and just isn’t quite good enough.

He also got one where the player turned it into his own net.

He actually has just over 19 full 90 minutes and about 3 games where he has been played as a forward which, to be frank, is the only position he’ll thrive at in the Premier League.

He has put in some great balls against Wolves and West Ham, I think he’s useful as a right sided inside forward, certainly he’s a model professional unlike some of the others we’ve got in the forward line.

I’d give him one more season, it’s worth the gamble as his value is so low currently due to about 6 full games per season in the EPL.

For me Ali J is stuck in a bit of a vicious circle. He was reluctant to take moves back to Holland or the Championship as believes he can make it at this level yet has not shown he can hold down a starting place in a bottom six side for 3 seasons. No club will pay a decent fee (or I am guessing wages) that would take him off our books so where does he go from here?

What is going to change for him next season that has not happened in the last 3 as he has not shown anything to make another PL or equivalent club take him off our hands?

For me he either stays and becomes an expensive bit part player for another season or he drops a level and takes a loan this summer for regular first team football.

I don’t think Welbeck helped AIi last night.. he made no attempts to get across his man , or to attack the near post when Ali had the ball in crossing positions. We were light getting players into the box with him too. I thought he played well enough, was as threatening as any other player on the pitch.

He's been our most direct threat of any of our attacking players recently, IMO. He at least isn't reticent to take on his man and has put in a number of decent crosses, as well as having some good shots saved. I still think there's a quality player in there. He's ample good enough to be a squad player for us.

Playing in the right position and tactics he's a starter . . . Would like to see him in the Slah position with Andone up front and Welbeck to the left of a front 3

I'm sure ANdone or a proper striker would get on the end of his crosses . . .maybe even COnnolly if they stay low

He's done enough to not get sold for £5m. Personally I would still take a decent offer as I'm not convinced he gets in this team when everyone is fit and available but on the flipside if he stays another 12 months he has earnt the opportunity as he has shown of late that he can play at this level even if its as a squad player rather than a starter.

This summer it will be tough to move players on for full value he's shown enough to persist with and maybe push Tau towards the exit instead. I can't see us retaining both...

I agree, he has played just under 20 full EPL games.

But his biggest problem is his clear lack of versatility, not a good trait playing for Potter. He is poor in a defensive side. His defending is average, his pace is average and his strength is average too. I don’t see him as a midfielder, wing-back or defender.

However, I’d be more than happy with him starting every game next season but only as a forward (right or maybe left, never No.9 ) in a front three.

There is enormous potential; put him in last year’s EPL winning Liverpool team (but only in Salah’s position) and how many goals would he get?

If he gets a run of games and goals, he could be a player to really cement our place closer to, or even in the top 10. He can do what so many Potter-ballers can’t in the final third, play a dangerous ball or score a goal.
