Will be interesting to see what Potters tactical plan is for Lalana. Seems to me just another player in the half space lacking pace like Mooy and Gross.

We’re signing the player who was named England’s player of the year just over 3 years ago on a free! This is a great step forward for the club, massively exciting times ahead.

He's 32, has a bit of a catalogue of injuries and has only played for his club 128 times in six seasons, we might be lucky and build a team around him in midfield but its more than likely that injuries and age means he does not play enough to actually make a difference. Even if he is an absolutely brilliant signing, we get 2-3 years out of him at best then we have to find a similar replacement... I think we are chucking money away. Better to try to develop our young players and at least cash in when they move to bigger clubs.

I don’t think the intention is to build a team around him.

He will play a part on and off the pitch, behind the scenes. As a serial winner, experience of first team football for the PL and European champions, England player of the year. He’ll be a great example and influence to our young squad. Theres a good read I linked earlier in the thread regards to his influence at Anfield. And presumably he will have some sort of coaching position lined up here.

It would be madness to build a team around a 32 year old. That said, for the way he plays I don’t think his age is a problem anyway. A South Coast Pirlo.

I guess that the club may actually see the signing of Lallana as another part of the plan that you're advocating. I don't suggest any comparison between the two players or suggest that Lallana's signing would bring anything like similar results, but the club could be looking for the same kind of thing that Clough & Taylor were looking for when they signed Dave Mackay at Derby. He was in his thirties, he had suffered injuries and they weren't going to make any money on resale. However, they already had good young players with raw potential, but saw the value of adding a player who knew what was needed to succeed at the top level and had the ability to set examples and standards and help lift the expectations of those around him.

If someone is able to come in and help improve the younger players that the club has or signs, the payback would not be in his own resale value, but from helping to bring the kind of improvement that can turn what may have been £10M players into £40M ones. I am of course just guessing at the club's motivation, but if we were looking to add that sort of thing to our squad, take a listen to what Klopp says about Lallana between 5:10 and 6:55 in this video and consider whether he may be a likely candidate to try it with:

If Lallana signs it reminds me of the summer in the Championship (but this time in the PL) we signed Bridge and Kuszczak. A real statement of intent from the board and manager to move the club to the next level. Very exciting times indeed.

As much stick as I gave BG, I am happy one of his ‘Sunday Gossip Column’ rumours will finally come true.

I have never suggested that we would or could sign him just that we can dream about such signings as he is far better than any midfielder that we have, although we have yet to see Macallister play for us. To sign such a player would mean us moving up to the next level.

Just wanted to quote the good man himself.
