I suppose Roy Cooper feels he needs to appease Republicans when his winning margin is a recounted 0.02%.
He does his best.

Good article that, cheers.

My mate was working for the BBC (reporter) in Washington when this all kicked off (fortunately he came home a few days later) and he said pretty much exactly what this guy is saying. The idea of "freedom" has morphed into being completely selfish and irresponsible, and screw everyone else. If they don't care about gun deaths, or "learn to live" with them, then what hope is there that the same people will care about others dying from a virus? Until it happens to them.

He also said that far more people in the US will die than in any other developed country. Partly because of the above but also due to the lack of any kind of joined up thinking in the healthcare service there. State to state, city to city or even hospital to hospital in the same city. It's a disjointed mess, and I guess that goes back to the original point as it's like that because of greed and selfishness masquerading as "freedom".

Good luck.

Out of interest what does the general populace of North Carolina think about reopening? Is this something driven at the corporate level or is it supported on a grassroots level too.

Depends on who you ask unfortunately. Some people legit think its a case of going to Walmart with their gun to make sure they aren't made to wear a mask, and others are wanting to follow the science. It's not even political really, two of my friends have just gone totally insane, one is a die hard Trump supporter who wants to extend the lockdown and another has been making very serious inroads to moving to Europe due to America being so conservative who actually went and attended one of those reopen rallies. I'm not really talking to that one anymore. Lol. It is definitely corporate driven though, absolutely no doubt about that part.

It's kind of interesting observing from a distance. Probably not so much up close.

I've got a number of American friends -all very nice, reasonable and intelligent people regardless of ideological persuasion. I know considerably more - all who seem very nice, reasonable and intelligent people regardless of ideological persuasion. I do contract work with the U.S Embassy and military - (mostly) all of whom are very nice, reasonable, intelligent people.

I've always known America was a slightly weird (to our - British - way of thinking) place. I've known that from conversations with said Americans, through the saturation of American culture all over the world and from my own (brief) experiences in America. Since Trump that weirdness in thought and action along with the unsettled divide at the heart of the country has become even more obvious. This Coronavirus pandemic has magnified it beyond belief.

It's hard to fathom, a little frightening and from a pyschological/sociological/political philosophy point of view quite interesting in an almost macabre way. It must make culture shock a strange thing. When I came to Japan there was plenty of cultural differences to overcome but they were always at the forefront. Both sides knew we were coming form different angles and were expecting issues. With the States it seems to me that 99% of the time life is normal and then out of the blue you get sideswiped by something completely unseen and unexpected. Kind of like walking down the road and a sinkhole suddenly opening up under your feet. At least in Japan I knew I was walking through a minefield.

From the BBC...…. US not certain virus came from lab - Pompeo
The US does not have certainty regarding the origin of the novel coronavirus, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has told reporters.
"We don't have certainty and there is significant evidence that it came from a laboratory," he said. "Those statements can both be true. I've made them both."

On Sunday, Pompeo said he had seen "enormous evidence" the virus came from a Wuhan laboratory, prompting China to ask him to reveal the evidence behind his claim.
The intelligence community has said the virus was not manmade or genetically modified, though they are looking into its origins. On Tuesday, the Pentagon said it had no conclusive evidence Covid-19 was intentionally released.
In response to a question from the BBC's Barbara Plett Usher on his assertions about the virus' origins, Pompeo said there was "no separation" in the answers from different US officials.
"We're all trying to get clarity."
Barbara Plett Usher says Pompeo's comments are "the latest salvo in what's been a torrent of criticism from the Trump administration".
"Other countries have criticised Chinese behaviour and some are demanding accountability," she notes. "But critics believe the Trump administration is also trying to deflect attention from its own slow response to the virus by hitting Beijing so hard."

Nice to see that cleared up then.

Every job loss is another person protesting

No wonder he’s opening up

Yep - it's not great surprise, esp when you take into account American's reluctance to apply for benefits.

What's our excuse?

Widely reported tonight that a number of White House staff have tested positive for Covid, including his valet .
Just how would everyone react if he ended up in ICU in the coming days ...?

It's stuff like this that really annoys me about Trump. He constantly says things like 'I've heard...', 'they say...', some people think...' as a get out and defense of his actions/inaction. You watch the video and he's in a huff, arms folded, shoulders hunched like a child told they can't have a snack before dinner.

It may be true that all the alternatives will be as bad as him if they were or become president(after all it would have taken more than a couple of paddles for the Titanic to have changed course) but I'm sure none of them, on a human level, will be quite so god awful a human being. A shocking excuse of a man.

Trump and Pence have both since tested negative.

You know if he does have it and survives that would be worse for America, he will see no reason to protect anyone

“I’ve had it and survived, everyone back to work”
