Has Balance not had plenty of opportunities to show his metal and failed generally so perhaps he joins Mark Ramprakash and others as a good county player who cannot cut it at test level.

And on the subject of occasional spinners - further to the 'what is the point of Dawson?' debate - I reckon Joe Root's spin looks more threatening than his does.

Thing with Buttler is he's only played 1 first class game this season, and scored 3 runs across 2 innings.

Surprised nobody has suggested Luke Wright at No 3
Luke Wright who is about 33, has never played a Test, is not a top order batsman, has never shown any interest in patiently building an innings in his entire career, and has got off the mark in 2 of his last 3 Sussex innings with a straight six?

Although, if you'd said Luke WELLS, that might be worthy of debate at some point.

I was taking the p..s suggesting him but it obviously passed over some peoples heads.
I was thinking this and then read that Woakes is probably out for the series. Definitely an option if fit.
How could anyone possibly tell, in light of your serious suggestions over the years?

Woakes would oust Wood from the side if fit for sure. Hell of a No9 bat too !

Even he would have been an improvement on what we had at the time but Luke Wright wouldnt be as he is a hit and miss big score or nothing batsman the likes of which we are complaining about.

Anyone know how Ian Bell is performing? IVO the lack of viable alternatives he has a technique that can still score runs at test level if required.

Can somebody help and find the up to date averages in county cricket this season for both Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott who would both be in the running if the recall of an oldie is considered.
Trott has retired from International cricket so he is out of the running.
Certainly the best number 3 we've had for a number of years. Really missed his stability at the top of the order.
Before him the last 4/5 years of Mark Butchers career were successful after a fairly mediocre start, but typically it's always been a problem area for us.
