Thread started on 19th April which is almost 6 months ago.

Will this dispute still be going on for it's anniversary on 19/04/2017 ?

At what point is Southern declared 'Not Fit for Purpose' and stripped of the franchise ?

The RMT are an absolute disgrace, trying to justify their existence. Get on with it, accept change, get into the 21st century and get the trains running again! ITS NOT DIFFICULT!

What part of Southern totally misamanaging their franchise did you miss? There have thus far only been 10 strike days this year, yet the service has been abominable because they run it so appallingly. Unable to hit reasonable punctuality targets the company have reduced the amount of trains they run on two separate occasions, and have still failed to deliver punctuality rates in the high 80's. Even on the DOO services they do run punctuality is still poor.

The RMT could bend over backwards and give in to every GTR demand and the service will not get better whilst these clowns are still in charge. Clowns that have already been paid by the govt using our tax money and have no incentive to improve the service because the government are happy to use them as cost-cutting hatchet men.

Thank goodness the passengers are finally taking the people really responsible for ths shambles to court to finally get some movement on this.

that is what some claim. doesnt make a lot of sense for the government to make themselves liable for more claims, so what do you think?

this is good news.

Whilst I agree it is great for us the commuter, does it really affect southern rail?

Does the compensation come out of the southern rail coffers or the Government coffers is it directly linked to the ticket sales, if this is the case then southern wont give a toss whether its 30, 15 or 1 minute as they aren't paying?

Personally thinking all compensation should come straight out hortons pocket.

Because the door business is a red herring which they are using along with the sham sickness allegations to try and win the media battle which unfortunately apart from a few idiots they've now lost. It's about staffing levels and breaking the unions to impose new working practices as Peter Wilkinson helpfully told everyone back in February

Unfortunately Ernest cannot respond as I am on his ignore or whatever list, bless him, but there is something I do not understand here, and would be grateful if someone genuinely in the know could help. When the CEO of SASTA announced a couple of days ago a raft of concessions, offers, or whatever you want to call it, one of them was that overtime would be guaranteed. He, who must ignore me, has repeatedly said that a central theme is one of low staffing levels, but if the CEO feels it necessary to assure staff that overtime will always be available, that suggests to me that the staff would not want "normal" staffing levels, as then overtime would not be an option, and cut their earnings, which would be understandable. This is not a loaded question, as I genuinely have no axe to grind either way, but am intrigued as to something that does not seem to add up.

I don't think anyone disputes Southern are big pile of steaming pooh OR how the franchise is operated is a complete and utter shambles which we can only hope the government learn from. However both the union and Southern have behaved disgracefully like a couple of arguing six year olds in the playground. The RMT have told their members to accept Southern's offer so why can't they just do that and get on with it?

Sadly I think we are far from a conclusion even if the guards do accept the offer. The drivers will then have a pop.

I can't get excited about the judicial review either. What is it going to find that isn't already out there?

It makes you wonder what they have to do TO get stripped. The other SASTA thread started last winter and we had been suffering a good few months before that too. The sooner some people realise the shit shower of a service we get is not all the RMT's fault, the better. Would help if some of the media started to recognise this as well in their reports.

Can we roll the clock back to pre-dispute days please? Back in those days, I was an occaional commuter and the service wasn't that bad. There were delays and occasional cancellations, but the latter were quite few and far between.

It seems to me that the disruptions to service, particularly cancellations, have ramped up significantly since the dispute with the RMT began. Is that because lots of guards suddenly got the sniffles, SASTA began cancelling trains for no good reason, overtime was banned or a disenfranchised workforce no longer wanted to work beyond core hours? Very probably some combination of all of those at different times. But it seems to me that the really dodgy service only became commonplace once the DDO dispute kicked in.

I'm no SASTA apologist - far from it - but aren't they also somwhat hamstrung with the Brighton mainline offering very little capacity as a result of under-investment under both Tory and Labour governments for a generation? The line seems to have multiple single points of failure such that it does not take much for the whole shebang to come grinding to a halt.

What I certainly don't believe is that the RMT are some sort of patron saints of passengers and safety that, initially at least, they seemed to be professing. At least they have come clean now, to a degree, that there is a signifciant element of job protecionism going on here.

I have long ago stopped believing unions when they harp on about safety - it is rarely really about this, but is trotted out to make their case look good and try to keep public opinion on board. Gradually as the dispute drag on, and the public can increasingly see that it is about the union members' jobs and salaries, then the cynicism kicks in. It is of course quite understandable that staff would be worried about their jobs, but going on about safety really just eventually undermines their positions.

What are you on about? I posted figures ages ago about their level of service. They had been shite for at least 6 months prior to the dispute started and the 'sniffles' excuse Southern were using when THEY temporarily banned overtime.
