We need to put the brake on them scoring as they could still win. I expect it to fizzle out to a draw, but who knows a good 30 mins after lunch by either side could change the outcome.

LOL. 281 is the highest EVER 4th innings score to win a game at Edgbaston. What made you think it was possible ?

Great result and sensible declaration by Cook, we won with 14 overs to spare so a shade under one hour of play. Too many times in the past we've wasted time piling on unnecessary runs, I think Cook's captaincy is improving with age.

Holding was saying we should have given them a total that was chaseable, so they'd take shots on - Willis was saying we should have declared earlier to have more runs - Cook said a total that looks out of reach can make a team defend for a draw, and that can cause nerves etc. Cook was right, credit to him.

As an accountant I'm guided by the stats, so if they say no team has successfully chased over 300 in the 4th innings to win a test at Edgbaston then the probability is once you've got a 300 lead you've probably done enough.

I get the fact that big lead enable a captain to set attacking fields whilst the batting team's mentality is completely defensive, but the overriding factor is time and the 10th wicket pair hung around for long enough last night to show that batting on that wicket was not so hard.

The stats also say you've only got a 3% chance of winning after conceding a 100 run lead in the first innings.

Try this stat on for size: We batted on and got a lead of 342, and we won with time to spare.

Still room for improvement. Bairstow and Ali should have played with more urgency in the last half hour of the 4th day. Runs were easier to come by and the bowlers were knackered and by coming back the next morning the batsman have to start again. That way we could have declared overnight and had 10 overs with the 2nd new ball later if needed. He's improving but still lets the things that distinguish a decent captain from a very good one pass him by.

We probably could have both had more runs & given ourselves more time if we'd been in 20/20 mode for the last half hour of the 4th day. Pakistan were out on their feet and Bairstow/ Ali were totally in.

Great performance nonetheless.
