Aren't rail companies obliged to find taxis now? I remember being put into a taxi at Leeds once to get to Ilkley when the incoming train was so late we missed our connection: the guy from the train company said the company had a legally responsibility to get passengers to their destination - although the people who didn't have a through ticket to other destinations were screwed, the operator only covered people who already had a ticket

Yes, this has always been the case, if you turn up in time for the last train and you already have a ticket, or missed connection on a through ticket due to the Railway's fault, they have to get you home same night. SASTA didn't seem to be making an effort to do at Havant a few weeks ago when I was in that situation coming back from London. Last night I understand the issue was that there were just a lot more people who needed taxis than were actual taxis available, so some extended waits whilst drivers did round trips.

My group had taken bikes on the train from Chi to Barnham to visit the Wilkes Head at Eastergate, so were able get back independently with a longer ride than planned after a few beers, rather than go back to Barnham to join the chaos. Knew it was a possibility, so we all had copious lights and hi-viz about us.

- Several times i've had taxis laid on to take me to Cooksbridge when trains cancelled etc. They sometimes lay these on automatically. Normally worth requesting.
- The other thing that few people are aware of is that you can request for unscheduled stops on the line if multiple delays/cancellations. In the last few weeks this has meant the driver adding an extra stop to Plumpton three times on my way home. This happened again last night. They weren't keen at first but the driver was a good sort who said he had no problems with it. Third Friday in a row. Now up to 9 Delay Repays in three weeks.

I wonder if this situation got politicised in the next week with Brexit saying that this is due to the EU and if we vote leave things would be sorted, Cameron & co would have to sort it swiftly as a short term PR thing for remain.

I can't see how this is going to be allowed to just carry on as it is without something having to be done, but by who and when god knows ?

presumably it will be resolved by rolling out the "onboard supervisors" which i read is from July.

now the question that occurs to me is what changes to allow this, is there a legal change or job role change for the drivers to begin DOO on those services? what requires that a train must have driver and conductor today that wont apply in the future?

That's already been put back, no OBS in July or do you mean July 2020 ?

DOO needs to have a safety case set by the ORR and to have the necessary infrastructure which would take a while, years rather than months which is why Peter Wilkinson let the cat out of the bag saying be prepared for years of disruption

Southern says 2016. it cant be 2020 otherwise they'd be no redundancies for 4 years. once the consultation notices go out its 3 months normally, once the conductors are redundant they must be replaced (function wise) by DOO. so either somethings already in place, safety can be signed off in a matter of weeks or theres an almighty cock up ahead. i wouldnt rule out the latter regardless of the implemention detail.

There is nothing place, staff consultation wise or infrastructure wise. Remember last Summer's unrest on First Great Western out of Paddington when they tried a similar thing on the new Hitachi rolling stock till they suddenly realised that nothing was ready and they had jumped the gun so swiftly had to back down to where it originally was.

Needs a purely independent Transport Ombudsman, following the very excellent model of the Financial Ombudsman. Even the banks at their worst rarely treated their staff and their customers with such utter contempt.

Apparently there's an anti-Southern DEMO being planned at Brighton station for Tuesday night at 6.30pm. If you're within chair-luzzing distance, please give it your support :moo:

Would love to see him reply to those points in a public interview

Doubt that will happen, even stopped putting his name at the bottom of the threatening letters.

I have noticed they don't say train cancelled to staff sickness anymore in their announcements just train crew shortages as more are seeing past their lies.

Just need more of the press to pick up on this now. Surprised they are so slow you would think it would make a juicy story.

Recently it's ALL been 'due to unusually high levels of sickness' announcements. Total BS obviously and shameful that they're actually allowed to put out that level of disinformation. This whole thing is just perverse now.

Well they have been doing, heard it many times.

I can tell you at moment their are 4 sick at Brighton and 5 sick at Barnham depots.
Not sure on others but these are the main two depots where guards are based.
