Christ, that's depressing!

Gutting not to be playing yesterday, in such beautiful weather. Hopefully more of that this weekend, when we'll hopefully, get our season finally underway.

At our club there's probably a few contributory factors so may not be as bad at others, also both our 1's and 2's have got promoted and as such we're taking Saturday's a bit more serious these days. I'm a big fan of Sunday cricket as it gives lots of people an opportunity to bat/bowl more than they do on a Saturday and also gives the colts good intro to proper cricket, but I know a fair few of our 1's don't play Sunday's as they struggle to get excited for friendly cricket. However playing 2 this weekend does see me going back to work on a Monday more tired than I left on Friday and does take the whole weekend away.

I stopped playing any league cricket 20 years ago, at the age of 25, partly because I wasn't able to commit to playing every week, but mostly because I got fed up with the number of twats involved - people taking themselves and their 'talents' way more seriously than they had any right to!

The batsmen not walking when I'd practically knocked a chunk out of the edge of their bat. The pathetic sledging. The (let's not sugar-coat it) cheating umpires. Got massively disillusioned that people wanted to win a GAME so much, they were prepared to resort to all that.

Yeah you've definitely got a valid point there. One thing we've benefited from getting promoted is we now have panel umpires, who are equally as useless, but dont cheat. We've not got to the stage where any of the chat on field has become nasty, but it would put me off given we're all pretty pony village cricketers anyway so seems a bit silly to get so riled up over nothing. I do like trying to win though, and our Sunday side has got so relaxed that its almost too laid back and no one cares.

Some of the cheating umpiring in the lower leagues is absolutely embarrassing though, almost to the stage where you can only laugh.

Very valid point - I gave up 7 years ago aged 21 as a combination of all those factors and a Captain that would happily cheat as an umpire, gave no advice to players and just ruined the game for a lot of us. It said a lot when he got smacked in the head by an attempted slog, and it was their batsman that went to check if he was OK. He was just a horrible piece of work.

Now I am playing league cricket but with a group of lads that genuinely love the game. We have won one match of 4 so far but even after the losses it has been a laugh, everyone giving their all and supporting people even if they drop a catch or miss a straight ball.

That was exactly it - the fact that such decidedly AVERAGE players were taking themselves so seriously. I'd not long finished playing 4 summers in the Lancashire leagues (whilst at Uni in Liverpool) with and against infinitely better players than any of these tools could ever hope to be - teams that took the competition very seriously without resorting to all that bollocks.

What tipped me over the edge was the horrible realisation that I was getting sucked into it. Wasn't prepared for that to happen so walked away.

I'm still very competitive. Every single run I concede physically pains me. Every time I beat the bat, and the jammy bugger isn't nearly good enough to edge it, it winds me up. But I seeth internally, like a gentleman, and get on with the GAME of trying to get him out. And then I shake hands with him, and have a BEER.

Absolutely get this and don't blame you. For what is basically village cricket, the twattishness of some players in the Sussex Invitation League is beyond belief (all divisions - I've experienced 1-9 and whilst the higher divisions are worse it still happens at the lower end too). The smart-arse sledging from players who think they're Ricky Ponting is completely unnecessary - have witnessed, for example, a 14 year old being given a 'f*** off you little ****' 'send off' by a middle-aged pie chucker. It's pathetic, it really is. Sad thing is the kids see it, and it's creeping into colts cricket as well now. One or two local 'big' clubs (the ones that think they're better than the rest) in particular seem to even be coaching it into their junior players. Very sad.

Back on topic, I would add that you'll get none of this at Parham !

Unfortunately you're quite a way from me as would have gladly volunteered one of my Sundays to play at that lovely looking ground. Although we did fairly recently play at Findon, good ground/club that.

I played league cricket, finishing the last 20 years in the East Sussex league div 1 right down to our thirds in div 12.

I was actually amazed at the sledging all through the leagues and yes, looking back I was one of those stupid twats when I was young who was a decent player and became an arrogant sod who got in the face of people, when it really didn't warrant it. I can even remember having words with Hans a few times when we played against eachother in brighton/ hove. Looking back it was rediculous.

What turned me off cricket eventually( I retired 3 years ago at 55) was when I was turning out for the thirds, I always said I would pack it in if I every played against old men and young boys...and sure enough I became one of them old men. I was "sledged" by a 9 year old boy for Hastings 4ths and I thought that was that! Daft thing is last year I played a game as someone asked me to and I ended up with 6 wickets and 87 runs against a decent Australian touring side. I have Ben asked again, but now I am fully immersed in golf....as the game is all about you and the course, not anyone in your face.

Agreed. That's what's stopped me playing League cricket on a regular basis. Unfortunately it creeps into Sunday village cricket on ocassion. Yesterday we had some young tyke hit the cover off it and stand there bold as brass while the umpire looked the other way. RIGHT, we said if that's the way they want to play it, and we played hardball, beating them by 1 wicket, but it still left a bad taste.

I remember Parham having a couple of old spinners who used to bowl straight out of the sun! Mark? And Brian Huffer gave no quarter. Smashing ground mind.

I think I played against a spinner at Steyning many moons ago who bowled through the lowering sun. It may have been the same match I came up against your Dad. (You and/or your brother may have been playing).

I was rather miffed at the tactic. I do think it is a little naughty.
