England squad announced for the Euros

Drinkwater really should have gone for one of the two midfielders who have been injured for ages (Wilshere and Henderson). Barkley is a very different option going forward so I think he deserves to go.

I worry about our wide options - i.e. Sterling being the only one

Squad is pretty good overall, but I just don't see what anyone sees in Jordan Henderson

Lallana too and I expect Vardy will be used as a winger (sigh).

The lack of a pacey winger to at least come off from the bench is a bit baffling, I agree.

I thought Townsend was one of the most exciting young England players I'd seen when he first played for the national team.

The idea of him being left out of the Euros and playing for a Championship team in 2016 would have been hard to believe at the time.

Sturridge man, FFS.

He'll be home before a ball is kicked having been injured by a freak breakfast incident involving a pot of yoghurt whose foil lid was a little difficult to remove.

It's about time we took 5 strikers to a major tournament. Not so long ago we'd take a miserly 3 so I welcome Hodgson's decision on that. The defence looks weak but for once we're going with an attacking and youthful looking squad which has goals in it.

It's not beyond the realms of possibility that Sturridge could break down again, either if he features against Portugal for any length of time or not. We can name a replacement for an injury right up until the first game against Russia.

Townsend has 3 goals in 11 for England, and 2 of those goals were when he came off the bench. He would have been invaluable, given the only out-and-out wide player we now have is Sterling, who blows very hot and cold.

Strange decision, and a rather unbalanced squad, with uber-crocks Sturridge and Wilshire included. Can't rely on them featuring.

Townsend is a poor player with very little end product. He always looks like a player with potential rather than a player for the present. A fleeting moment of form at Newcastle does not change that.

Exactly. Neither Vardy or Lallana are wingers. I'm surprised Townsend didn't get the nod for that reason alone. Why take so many strikers but no wingers?

It certainly points to us playing a diamond with two upfront though.

I know that Drinkwater has been great in the Leicester team, but thought he looked very anonymous for England. If he was a game changer like Rashford then I could understand taking a punt on someone who offers something unpredictable, but he's similar to most other midfielders. Good player in Leicesters team but an unnecessary gamble for England.

4 fullbacks suggests he'll have them bombing forward too, which will provide plenty of hairy moments given the aforementioned lack of DM's and our centre back shortcomings.

Have Walcott and Oxlade-Chamberlain been out injured, or just out of favour? I don't really follow the Premier League, but those are the only other two wide players I can think of in the England setup.

I like the emphasis on attacking, but England look light at the back, I guess Jagielka is done and Jones has been out a while? Again, I don't really follow PL.

Hart
Walker Smalling Cahill Rose
Dier
Rooney Alli Sterling
Vardy Kane
