Not quite Brighton, but Jeremy's at Borde Hill (nr Haywards Heath) is consistently right up there. Have to go to London to beat it.

Amazed, but thankful, it hasn't received a Michelin star yet; as selfishly don't want it getting too popular.

Menu d'hôte is exceptional value (about £20 for three courses) homemade walnut bread is worth the trip alone. Lots of locally sourced produce. Good wine list. Also, there's usually a barrel of Harvey's in the bar area.

Beautiful walled garden, with rolling Sussex countryside beyond, near perfect on a Summer's evening... Will stop now, as filling up.

Long time lurker, first time poster. Have finally dived in.

Welcome.

Interesting point about stars. We have a fantastic restaurant near us which finally got a star. It's a mixed blessing but I was super pleased for them when it arrived.

Reds BBQ is a small northern chain. Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham from memory

Went there again yesterday for 4th time and very good authentic smoked BBQ. Brisket was excellent, pulled pork a little bit dry. St Louis ribs also very nice with dry rub.

Slightly expensive for portion size and beer £5 a pint but definitely one of the better BBQ places in the UK

7/10

I have been meaning to try the burgers at The Troll's Pantry at the Hobgoblin for a while as everyone says good things. The gourmet burger scene in Brighton is a competitive one and I think you're hard pressed to top Burger Brothers, but these are right up there.

Read my review http://foodieeshe.com/review-the-trolls-pantry/

Interesting review, must check out Burger Bros. And well done on raising the issue of how they're cooked. I find the issue of rare burgers frustrating. I actually know a place here which refuses to serve their burgers any more cooked than medium.

Burger Brothers' Simple Jack is the best burger in town and cheap compared to those messy affairs the troll serves up. Don't get me wrong, the troll changed the game in this town but Burger Brothers have perfected the simple cheeseburger.

Can't believe you still haven't broken your BB cherry after all this time. I recommend the Simple Jack with prosciutto and pepper punch sauce.

I know I know. You recommended them ages ago. Next season I promise!

I went to my first proper visit* to Fourth & Church last early evening, before going on to the Phronesis gig, followed by a swift one in The Basketmakers -- which was a fine evening.
The wine was bound to be good, and we had a stunning, rich, complex Barbera which was recommended. It cost £32, restaurant wine mark-ups mean that other establishments (I'm looking at you Set, for instance) would be charging at least twice that amount. We also had a great glass of Alvarinho. They do wine first, and the food follows on from that. That doesn't mean that it's a poorer cousin, although it's worth pointing out that this isn't a conventional restaurant, and you won't get the equivalent of a main course here -- they serve small plates, cured meats, cheese plates. The quality of the cooking in those small plates was exceptional, and it seems that Sam the co-owner and chef has really thought about how to prepare dishes for such an establishment, drawing on his experience at a number of restaurants (including The Fat Duck, if memory serves me right).
We could only spend c75 minutes there, but I'm really keen to go back for a longer outing and regularly.

* I had attended their opening night, as I know Paul, the co-owner, who had served me ably a good few times while he was working at Butlers.

This place sounds good -- can you name names please?

I used to rate the burgers in Browns, Brighton until they wouldn't oblige my medium-rare request. It's gone steadily down hill since.

You need to hop on a plane but it's this place http://www.thebirdinberlin.com

Coincidentally I was at a gig the other night and there was a guy in the garden doing burgers from http://www.schillerburger.com Behind him was a huge sign stating the burgers will be medium.

A few years back a handful of us Albion fans travelled to Berlin to watch England in a friendly.
Whilst travelling around bar hopping we came to one establishment run by two sisters(we think),it was tiny you really couldnt fit more than 20 people in the place,we were bemused by the steady stream of locals who were popping in,ordering the only thing on the menu (a goulash) having one drink and going home.We ended up ordering the dish out of curiosity and have to say we all agreed it was simply the most delicious thing we have ever tasted.

we have all since returned individually and searched again for this heaven but none of us can remember exactly where it was(beer problems)......it was def near a U bahn,we thought maybe Marienplatz but this was searched with no results.........its a hell of a long shot but does this place ring any bells at all......is it a well known locals hangout.......if it helps the sisters were blond and one had massive tits.....on the scale one would never forget

That often helps. Hope it does in this case.

its important to give out as much relevant information as possible in these sort of situations.

how disappointed would you feel to be sent on a wild goose chase to a bar in east berlin on a recommendation only to find the sisters were flat chested and the goulash rubbish
