I'd definitely recommend The Set, the menu doesn't read like it's exciting but the food was some of the best I've had in Brighton. Fantastic.

Has anyone got a recommendation for somewhere to take my wife for a birthday dinner? One of us is a vegetarian so I am looking for somewhere with a good vegetarian selection. We have been to Terre a Terre before and liked that but thought about trying somewhere new.

Looking at the reviews on here I was thinking maybe 'the set' however the menus on their website don't actually look that inspiring if I am honest.

Another shout out for Set from me. If not, try 64 Degrees.

Thanks for the advice, will probably give 'the set' a go as seems to get universal approval.

I'd be surprised if you were disappointed. We sat at the pass there, which gave an extra dimension, watching the chefs go about their work and being able to talk to them about the dishes they were preparing. I appreciate it might not be for everyone.

Me again!

''Gosh, Chappers, haven't you been a busy boy.'' I hear you cry. Well YES, I have.

The Father in Law was in town last night which generally means a cuzza and we finally tried Eastern Eye last night.

No starters were taken as we stayed in the pub too long and it was 9 by the time we got in there.

I had a Spicy Prawn and Spinach curry which was FAB. The spinach retained it’s irony qualities which I find is rare in you run of the mill curry house and the prawns were plentiful and cooked really WELL. The only thing I’d say is that if you have the word spicy in the title of the dish then you expect a tad more heat than I experienced, but I’m not a massive fan of throwing chillies at curry so it was okay. Others might have been disappointed.

The missus had some friend paneer thing which was the opposite, and good amount of heat which threatened to overpower everything else but actually the flavour was great.

A vindaloo was taken which could have been hotter as well according to the diner but I thought it was a nice piece of cooking and he’s lived in the middle east so is used to a bit of fire here and there.

Kingfishers were had which is my favourite curry house lager and the wine was apparently fine.

Service understated and polite and NO FREE SHIT BRANDY (or Irish Cream for the lady) which is always a bonus.

Enjoyable evening, will return for a proper feed soon.

8/10. Solid.

Ps very parpy this morning but I think that’s the Timmy Taylors we had in the Great Eastern before more than the food. Ooh, Great Eastern >> Eastern Eye. There’s a thing.

CHAPPERS I like your reviewing style.

I went to UNITHAI yesterday and had a very authentic duck curry for 7 quid. Highly recommended.

Kudos noted. Thanks!

64 degrees is TOP BANANA but if I were a proper veggie I'd be going to Terre a Terre for the tapas thing. It really is good.

I really must get to the Set.

Getting back in to the old eating out after marathon training. On Sunday just gone we took our kids to a show in the Festival and then round some of the Fringe stuff intending to eat at Wahaca, the new Thomasina Miers chain doing Mexican street food and tapas. (Wonder why the Masterchef finalists went to Mexico this year? Hmmm.)

Totally mixed bag. The food was AMAZING. Certainly the tastiest I've ever had in a reasonably priced chain. Fresh, light, spicy, well conceived. So far, so good. Unfortunately this is making it over popular. There was already a queue outside at 11.50 and we nearly didn't get a table (there were 6 of us, hadn't booked admittedly). Finally we were reluctantly shown to a corner table, three of the four other tables near us remained resolutely unfilled for the duration though. 25 minutes to even see a menu or server (and then we had to call one over), half an hour to get drinks and 50 minutes until the food arrived. When it did it all came at once. (EDIT - this is a problem because they recommend 2 to 3 tapas dishes. They do tell you the food comes out when it is ready but we went from empty table to having not enough room and some of us had to choose from 3 different plates of hot food)

Avoid until the fuss has died down.

Having eaten at Wahaca in London a few times as well as in Bristol, I'm not sure it will for some time. Getting a table quickly doesn't seem to happen often and many folk are happy to wait it out for one.

Agree with your sentiments on the food though - not had a bad meal in one yet.

I tried to get a table for two at 16:45 last Tuesday and they wanted me to wait 30 minutes!

We went to Wagamama instead.

If anyone is around for festival happenings at the weekend I'd recommend giving Papa Pitta a go in the Spiegeltent area. More than decent Cypriot food. The Sheftalia are excellent as is the beetroot and feta salad. Have the halloumi pitta.

All very reasonably priced.

Interesting that there is so much hype around wahaca in Brighton. It's just another chain in London. The one at white city Westfield is fairly empty these days. The new one next to Liverpool Street pretty dead as well.

I wouldn't say it's hyped particularly more than any other half-decent (or better) food opening in Brighton - it benefits from being in a very visible location and well known as an existing brand. I reckon there has been more hype around Polpo to be honest.

Maybe "hype" is the wrong word. It seems very popular - online and in real life - with forty-something "family foodies" who watch Masterchef and want their kids to eat something tasty and different rather than McDonalds (I'm guilty on all three counts). It's appeared countless times on FB checkins on my time line since it opened. If I was just going out with teh Mrs, however, I wouldn't go near it. I'd pick something more fine dining.

It's because all those who have moved down from London can add it to their list of things they don't miss about London when speaking to their friends who still live in London.

Good summary, that.

Curiously, I doubt we'll go there much, if at all, with the kids as they'll always choose Yo! or Wagamama for fun food chain dining.

Wahaca is decent enough for a £15 per head type of lunch. Can imagine good for kids too.

I did try and go to the one nesr London Waterloo a few weeks back on a Saturday and completely full with 30min wait at 8pm. Had to settle for Byron instead.

Agree would rather La Choza probably

Support your local independent FULLY free range Mexican at La Choza.

I've already got it on my list based on your recommendation. I'll say though, from what I remember when I looked at the menu before, that it's slightly different from Wahaca in that it's a bit more of a conventional starter/main type of setup as opposed to Wahaca's smaller tapas type dishes.

It is but their specials are top notch as are the starters.

Not quite Brighton, but Jeremy's at Borde Hill (nr Haywards Heath) is consistently right up there. Have to go to London to beat it.

Amazed, but thankful, it hasn't received a Michelin star yet; as selfishly don't want it getting too popular.

Menu d'hôte is exceptional value (about £20 for three courses) homemade walnut bread is worth the trip alone. Lots of locally sourced produce. Good wine list. Also, there's usually a barrel of Harvey's in the bar area.

Beautiful walled garden, with rolling Sussex countryside beyond, near perfect on a Summer's evening... Will stop now, as filling up.

Long time lurker, first time poster. Have finally dived in.
